Canada Addition? The Airline That Could Be oneworld’s Newest Member


Porter Airlines is looking to fill a gap in the network of one of the world’s largest airline alliances. While its competition has a strong presence in Canada, oneworld has zero member carriers from the Great White North. Both of the alliance’s competitors have an established share of the market. Star Alliance has Air Canada, and SkyTeam has a partnership with WestJet.

Porter already has a number of bilateral partnerships and codeshare agreements with several oneworld member airlines, including American Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. Porter has been modernizing its fleet, expanding its network reach to reach a competitive share of the Canadian market.

The alliance has said it is always looking for “white spaces on the map” where it lacks coverage, and Canada is a major one. Kevin Jackson, President of Porter Airlines, has publicly acknowledged that oneworld lacks a Canadian partner and that Porter would be the “obvious answer” if they choose to join an alliance.

Porter Airlines’ Proven Track Record

While there are strong strategic arguments and mutual interest, the timeline and final decision remain speculative. Porter is still assessing if the costs of full alliance membership are worthwhile compared to its current partnership model, and the complex process requires agreement from existing oneworld members.

The codesharing relationship between Porter Airlines and American Airlines includes routes between Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) and Halifax Stanfield Airport (YHZ), Ottawa Airport (YOW), and Winnipeg International (YWG) that serve American Airlines passengers. American’s AAdvantage members can earn miles and loyalty points on AA-marketed Porter flights.

Meanwhile, Porter has expanded service to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Philadelphia (PHL), and Charlotte (CLT), thanks to the relationship. The bilateral partnership facilitates one-ticket booking, checked bags to the final destination (after clearing customs), and protected connections.

Porter’s VIPorter program and Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan program exchange miles and points as part of their global partnership. Flight options for customers at major US West Coast airports, such as Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO), are boosted for Porter by the partnership.

Porter and British Airways have also partnered to enable connections between Porter’s Canadian flights and BA’s vast network in the United Kingdom and Europe. Through Doha, a codeshare arrangement links Porter’s network with the reach of Qatar Airways into the Eastern Hemisphere. Porter has cooperative contracts with Fiji Airways and Japan Airlines (JAL) as well as two more oneworld members.

These collaborations demonstrate to the oneworld that Porter can seamlessly integrate and provide value. Given the existing codesharing and passenger transfer systems, the airlines are already collaborating in ways that resemble a mini-alliance. This operational experience simplifies the technical aspects of joining the entire alliance as a full member. The 350 million loyal oneworld customers will be incentivized to fly within Canada in order to earn miles and maintain elite status throughout the alliance.

Porter’s move immediately elevates him to a major competitor in Canada. Porter passengers gain immediate, one-stop-shop access to hundreds of global destinations that Porter does not and cannot serve with its fleet. Developing reciprocal loyalty benefits, aka earning and redeeming miles, is a key component of the oneworld value proposition. The current alliance members include:

The renovation of Porter Airlines’ fleet is the biggest factor that has increased the airline’s contemplation of joining an alliance. The airline debuted 29 brand-new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft in 2023. Compared to its short-haul Dash 8 Turbo prop aircraft, these larger, longer-range aircraft enable the airline to service farther-flung routes.

The development of operations at major hub airports in Canada, such as Toronto Pearson and Billy Bishop Toronto Airport (YTZ), went hand in hand with this fleet overhaul. Pearson is a major hub for American Airlines, a member of oneworld, and the biggest international gateway in Canada. To make the most of these fleet and network improvements, Porter has proactively developed more codeshare and interline agreements in recent years.

In-flight amenities on the Porter fleet have also been improved, with free high-speed Wi-Fi, complimentary beer and wine, more leg room, and other changes to bring the service level closer to the oneworld alliance’s premium travel experience. All of this has positioned the airline as an ideal contender to assist oneworld advance up the ranks. Currently, the largest airline alliance is Star Alliance, followed by SkyTeam and oneworld.

The process of joining a global alliance, such as oneworld, typically takes 12 to 24 months and includes several stages. Following an invitation to join and acceptance, one of the existing members would provide guidance. Porter expects American or BA to facilitate the transition, similar to a “sponsor” program.

An audit is performed across dozens of business areas, including electronic systems, frequent flyer programs, and operational procedures, to identify potential discrepancies with oneworld standards that should be improved or updated. The integration phase is the longest because all of these changes are incorporated into the existing system that Porter currently uses on a daily basis. This is due to the fact that system-wide changes must be completed without disrupting services.

Travelers would benefit immediately and significantly once Porter officially joined. Porter allows customers in Canada to book single-ticket itineraries from smaller Canadian cities to virtually any destination worldwide served by oneworld partners. Once Porter has been officially certified as a oneworld member, a formal “joining ceremony” is held.

Top-tier Porter VIPorter members would have access to more than 600 oneworld lounges worldwide, including premium first class lounges. Priority check-in, boarding, security, baggage handling, and extra baggage allowances would be valid on all oneworld member flights.

Is There Any Competition?

In Canada, the main competitor to Porter Airlines that oneworld might consider is WestJet, but a SkyTeam partnership is considered far more likely for WestJet. No other Canadian airline is a serious contender for alliance membership. WestJet has historically avoided full alliances, preferring bilateral partnerships.

Kevin Jackson, president of Porter Airlines, gave remarks at the Skift Aviation Forum in Texas in December, according to The Points Guy. He said:

“We are forming relationships with a lot of oneworld carriers right now. The partners that are available to use are clearly oneworld. oneworld does not have a presence in Canada, and Porter would make a very obvious answer to that if we choose to join.”

WestJet is Canada’s second-largest airline and operates a broader network, including transatlantic and transpacific routes on its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. There would be significant network overlap with existing oneworld members American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, making alliance membership unlikely.

SkyTeam members Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, and Air France-KLM own a 25% ownership stake in WestJet. WestJet is the obvious choice for SkyTeam because of this arrangement. The full-service network, business focus, and worldwide connectivity necessary for a significant alliance like oneworld are typically absent from other Canadian airlines like Flair Airlines and Air Transat.

Skyward Trajectory For oneworld

The alliance has strategically focused on a “premium” market position rather than sheer size to compete with the larger Star Alliance and SkyTeam, alongside targeted network expansion and technological collaboration. The top-tier oneworld Emerald status is widely considered the industry’s best, offering unique perks and fast-track services across all member airlines.

The oneworld alliance officially became operational in February 1999, with five initial members: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Canadian Airlines, and Qantas. Finnair and Iberia both joined within the first year as well. Canadian Airlines was acquired by Air Canada in 2000, removing it from the alliance and creating a gap that is yet to be filled.

When Qatar Airways joined oneworld in 2012, it became the first of the three major Gulf carriers to do so. In 2021, Alaska Airlines joined as a full member. The alliance ensures a high standard of service by bringing together some of the top, quality-focused airlines in the world. Benefits for top-tier members (Emerald, Sapphire) are numerous and include extra baggage and access to more than 650 airport lounges.

Most recently, Oman Air joined Qatar Airways in 2024 to bolster the Middle Eastern Network. In 2026, Hawaiian Airlines is anticipated to join as well. Fiji Airways was promoted from a oneworld Connect partner to a full member in 2025. This greatly strengthens the alliance’s position in Asia’s South Pacific.
