British Airways Has Ended Airbus A380 Flights On 8 Routes: Full List

British Airways’ first Airbus A380 arrived in July 2013. Some 12 frames were delivered, and all aircraft are still used. In the subsequent 12-and-a-half years, BA has ceased using the double-decker on eight commercial routes from London Heathrow.

According to ch-aviation, BA’s dozen A380s average 11.8 years. They’re its second-oldest widebody subfleet, after its 777-200ERs (25.9 years). Each superjumbo has 469 seats, which, for unfair context, is barely more than ANA’s domestic Boeing 787-10s. BA’s A380s have 14 seats in first class, 97 in business, 55 in premium economy, and 303 in economy. All aircraft will be retrofitted with the latest cabins, which are sorely needed to increase competitiveness.

BA No Longer Uses The A380 On These 8 Routes

Using Cirium Diio data to examine where BA flew the A380 between 2013 and 2025 and what’s planned in 2026 indicates that eight routes no longer see it. Some were very time-limited. They include Frankfurt sorties for crew training and familiarization and European hops during the pandemic. And BA operated the type to Doha on behalf of partner and fellow oneworld member Qatar Airways for the World Cup.

With over 2,300 one-way flights, Hong Kong saw the double-decker the most. In fact, it is BA’s fifth most-served A380 route of all time, behind Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco. The Pearl of the Orient combined everything to warrant superjumbo service: substantial traffic overall and enormous premium demand.

Since COVID-19 and the increasing influence of mainland China, things have changed dramatically. When all aircraft are considered, BA once served Hong Kong three times daily. But now it’s daily on the A350-1000. Virgin Atlantic ceased flying there in 2022, with Cathay Pacific in a more dominant position than ever before.

BA’s A380s To Washington Dulles

Everyone knows that the Virginia airport is the international gateway to the critical DC area. It recently welcomed the announcement of EVA Air’s Taipei flights and Air Premia from Seoul Incheon. What it doesn’t have anymore are BA’s A380s, which might be a good thing in terms of an inferior product. However, Dulles still has Lufthansa’s A380s from Munich during the summer, while Emirates’ superjumbos run daily year-round.

BA deployed the 469-seater to Dulles between October 2014 and July 2017, when it operated daily year-round. Cirium shows a handful of flights in early 2019, with the type running daily during winter 2019/2020. Then the world temporarily changed. The A380 returned to Dulles in March 2022, operating seasonally until early November 2025. During this period, it was mainly on BA293, which arrived in Virginia after 8:00 pm local time. BA292 departed at nearly 11 pm.

When writing, it is unknown whether BA will return the type to Dulles. In 2026, BA serves the airport twice daily during the winter (variously on the A350-1000/787-9/787-10/777-200ER; all-787-10 in winter 2026/2027) and triple daily in the summer (777-200ER/777-300ER).

Emirates was the first airline to bring the A380 to O’Hare. It did so once, in 2016, to test infrastructure. BA provided the airport’s only regular superjumbo service. This existed on a seasonal basis between May 2018 and October 2019, and on a year-round basis from June 2022 until December 2023.

O’Hare is one of only a tiny number of US airports to have lost regular A380 services. Atlanta has also done so, albeit not by BA. SkyTeam’s Korean Air used the type there between September 2013 and March 2017, while Air France did so from March until October 2019. Qatar Airways teased Atlanta with a one-off service in 2016 to mark its new Doha route.
