British Airways’ 8 Surprising Nonstop Routes Outside The UK

For obvious reasons, nearly all of British Airways’ flights operate nonstop to and from the UK. However, like many network operators, it has a handful of one-stop services, too. All of these are the so-called fifth freedom operations. This means they begin and end in the UK, with passengers able to book tickets on the leg that doesn’t touch the homeland.

This article looks specifically at the nonstop legs that are away from the UK. Yes, they are, of course, part of a one-stop operation that touches the UK. But they are also intriguing in themselves, not least because some of them are among BA’s shortest flights across its full network.

They are shown above and listed below in alphabetical order. They are based on using the oneworld member’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio, with its full network examined. As all of them are tagged with the UK, they are distinct from Lufthansa’s London Heathrow-Salzburg service, which is a standalone operation distinct from its German flights.

Notice the first entry: Antigua to St. Kitts. BA’s frames have been used to the tiny Caribbean island of St. Kitts since 2009. This leg is particularly intriguing it covers just 54 nautical miles (100 km) each way. It is BA’s shortest commercial service across all of its routes. Flightradar24 shows that the Boeing 777-operated flights often take around 15 minutes.

Doesn’t time fly? The airline has served Georgetown, the capital of the South American nation of Guyana, since March 2023. In the subsequent three years, all services have operated via St. Lucia. The Caribbean-Guyana leg covers 461 nautical miles (854 km) each way, with fifth freedom rights available. It does, of course, use the high-capacity, less-premium, so-called Gatwick-configured 777-200ER, with 336 seats.

Guyana’s oil production has soared, which must have at least partly influenced the UK operator in launching the route. (It undoubtedly influenced United, but its Houston-Georgetown service has its lowest international load factor.) Moreover, Guyana was a British colony, which explains why London is comfortably its top European market. Booking data suggests that about 40% of European passengers fly to/from the UK capital. Separately, KLM debuted in Georgetown in June 2025, and now operates via Barbados.

Over the years, BA has operated dozens of other legs that did not touch the UK on a nonstop basis. They’ll be explored more comprehensively another time. Examining BA’s schedule for 2025 indicates that BA operated between Antigua and Aruba, with flights naturally starting and ending at Gatwick.

The carrier flew to Aruba between March 2023 and March 2025, always via Antigua. The intra-Caribbean leg covered 552 nautical miles (1,022 km) each way. Given Aruba is in the Dutch Caribbean, traffic is relatively minimal to/from the UK. Still, BA would have bet on it being a relatively low-risk addition, given it only involved a hop within the Caribbean. But even then, it didn’t work out.
