Brazil’s GOL To Launch First-Ever Long-Haul Flights This Summer


Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has revealed plans to launch its first long-haul passenger route, connecting Rio de Janeiro with New York, reports PR Newswire. The airline will begin nonstop flights between Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on July 8, 2026. The service will operate three times per week and represents a major milestone for the airline, which has historically focused on short and medium-haul operations.

The launch forms part of GOL’s broader strategy to expand internationally and introduce widebody aircraft into its fleet. Initially, the route will be flown using Wamos Air Airbus A330-200 aircraft before the airline begins receiving its own Airbus A330-900neos later in 2026. These aircraft will allow the airline to establish a permanent long-haul presence and potentially expand to additional intercontinental destinations.

GOL’s new Rio–New York route is scheduled to begin on July 8, 2026, with flights operating three times weekly between Galeão International Airport and New York JFK Airport. The service will primarily target both leisure and business travelers traveling between the two major tourism and economic centers. Departures from Rio are planned for late evening arrivals into New York the following morning, while the return service will operate overnight back to Brazil.

The airline will initially rely on a leased Airbus A330-200 from Spanish charter and ACMI operator Wamos Air. This temporary solution allows GOL to start selling tickets and operating the service before its own long-haul aircraft arrive. Once deliveries of its Airbus A330-900neo fleet begin later this year, those aircraft are expected to gradually take over the route.

For more than two decades, GOL has built its business around an all- Boeing 737 fleet serving domestic and regional destinations across Latin America. The introduction of Airbus A330 aircraft represents a significant change in strategy, enabling the airline to compete in long-haul markets for the first time. Establishing a transcontinental route from Rio also reinforces the airline’s commitment to developing the city as a key international gateway.

Rio de Janeiro already serves as one of the airline’s largest operational bases, with numerous domestic connections feeding into Galeão Airport. By launching a long-haul route from the city, GOL can use its extensive Brazilian network to connect passengers from across the country to international flights. This connectivity could help strengthen Rio’s role as an alternative gateway to São Paulo for international travel.

Competition on the route could also increase as the new service adds capacity between Brazil and the United States. While flights between the two countries are well established, direct connections between Rio and New York have historically fluctuated depending on demand and airline strategy. GOL’s entry could provide travelers with additional options while stimulating demand for travel between the cities.

As part of its long-haul expansion, GOL plans to add several Airbus A330-900neo aircraft to its fleet. These modern widebody aircraft offer improved fuel efficiency and extended range compared to earlier A330 variants, allowing the airline to operate longer routes with greater economic efficiency. The aircraft are expected to seat roughly 300 passengers, depending on the final cabin configuration.

Beyond New York, the airline has indicated that additional international destinations will be considered once the A330neos enter service, though no formal announcements have yet been made. Expanding into these markets would mark a further evolution of GOL’s network beyond its traditional focus on the Americas.

Overall, the planned Rio–New York service represents a significant turning point for the airline as it transitions from a predominantly short-haul operator into a carrier capable of competing on intercontinental routes.
