Bill Belichick is moving on after being snubbed.

The UNC football coach, who did not become a first-ballot Hall of Famer earlier this year despite his storied success in the NFL, is choosing to look to the future, heading into his second season as the Tar Heels head coach — instead of dwelling on the past.

“No, I’m focused on coaching this team and focused on getting Carolina football to the highest level I can,” Belichick, 73, said to reporters on the first day of spring football practice, according to the Fayetteville Observer. “That’s what I’ve always … I focus about what I can do. Things that are out of my control, I don’t worry about.”

Coming off a 4-8 season, the former New England Patriots head coach is aiming to build upon the foundation he set last year, which was mired by the team’s poor play on the field, numerous distractions off of it and even talk of the coach taking a buyout due to the team’s disappointing play.

But when Belichick failed to make the Hall of Fame class this year, many former players, members of the media and fans were left perplexed, considering his storied NFL career.

“I don’t believe that any coach in the history of the game has done more to earn his place in the Hall of Fame than Bill Belichick,” Tom Brady said in part in his statement at the time. “To say that he was my greatest coaching influence would be an understatement. His tremendous leadership, vision, and daily discipline allowed our team to excel in nearly every area for almost two decades.”

Meanwhile, Rob Gronkowski took to task voters who were responsible for the snub.

“The system needs to be checked up on,” he told PEOPLE while on Media Row before Super Bowl LX in February. “This just shows that there’s gonna be no other first-ballot Hall of Fame coach, you know, for the rest of history. There shouldn’t be because Coach Belichick’s the greatest coach of all time.”
