Two Doors Down, the BBC comedy series about a suburban Scottish couple with constantly knocking neighbours, is to be brought to the stage.

Unusually, it will make that journey with the full cast from the hit TV show intact. Alex Norton and Arabella Weir will reprise their roles as Eric and Beth, whose house on Latimer Crescent is consistently besieged by the street’s residents, usually expecting a drink or two. Elaine C Smith will return as the oversharing Christine, and Doon Mackichan and Jonathan Watson are reuniting as a flashy couple, with an unhealthy interest in everyone’s intimate business. The younger couple on the street will again be played by Graeme Stevely and Joy McAvoy, while Jamie Quinn will be back as Eric and Beth’s son, Ian, with standup Kieran Hodgson once more playing his partner, Gordon.

The show will be staged at the Hydro in Glasgow from 25-27 September next year. Set in Eric and Beth’s home, the plot revolves around a big announcement from Ian and Gordon.

There have been seven series of the award-winning TV show, which started as a one-off special in 2013 and then moved from BBC2 to BBC1. The sitcom was created by Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp. Carlyle died in 2023 at the age of 48. “When Two Doors Down started to take off, ultimately, its success was down to the comedy of recognition,” wrote Sharp that year in a tribute to his co-writer. “It was people seeing the truth of the characters and recognising people from their own life in them. It was really all about the depth of character and its lightness, its cheeriness – what Simon was amazingly good at.” Carlyle said that the character of Ian drew on his own experiences of coming out and that Beth was inspired by his own mother.

Announcing the stage adaptation, Sharp said: “It’s always a treat to go to the Hydro to see a show so it’s a dream come true to be bringing Two Doors Down to such an amazing venue with the full cast from the TV series. They are an incredible group of performers, and we can’t wait to welcome the audience into Beth and Eric’s home where we can guarantee there will be some surprises as well as the odd person behaving entirely true to form!”
