Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka says the first few weeks under Vincent Kompany “weren’t easy”

As Leon Goretzka bids what can only be a bitter and hard farewell to Bayern Munich, he looks back on his time here.

The midfielder joined from Schalke 04 in 2018 and for the most part, was reliable. Following Javi Martinez’s departure, he took on the No. 8 shirt. Goretzka was undeniably a key player in Bayern’s journey to Lisbon in 2020, and in the sextuple as a whole. However, the last few years have been tough for the 30-year-old. He has lost his position in the starting lineup mostly to Aleksander Pavlović, who has been doing extraordinarily well.

His situation meant that his time with Bayern had to come to an end and so it did — he will not be extending his contract as it expires in a few months from now.

Looking back on his time here, the German international talks about giving his best. “It’s part of being professional to always give your best. There were ups and downs, but the positive phases certainly overshadowed the negative ones,” he said, per @iMiaSanMia.

Further, the midfielder remarked that manager Vincent Kompany’s arrival wasn’t easy for him.

“The first few weeks under Vincent Kompany weren’t easy for me, but I’ve always said that we have a good relationship and that we’re honest with each other,” he said.

This comes as no surprise, since it is well known that the Belgian can be rather demanding with his players.

“I’m sure if I work hard and perform, I’ll continue to get my chance,” he went on. “Hopefully we’ll be able to celebrate with the fans at the end of the season,” Goretzka declared.
