Backgrounder: Amendments to sanctions related to Syria



On December 8, 2024, Canada welcomed the end of the Assad regime in Syria, reaffirmed its commitment to the Syrian people and urged all parties to work toward an inclusive political transition. Canada committed to collaborating with partners to support the Syrian people and to hold the Assad regime to account before the International Court of Justice for the torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment and punishment of their own people.
