“How to live a good life through beadwork is hugely important,” Gereaux explains. “From this, I had the inspiration to divide the novel into the four elements that Métis life encompasses: the life cycle of plants — stems, leaves, buds, flowers and petals. I knew it would be important to Florence but didn’t know how important until I started writing. It’s her way back into her culture.”
