A day after the Arizona Cardinals made the decision to have Jacoby Brissett start at quarterback in Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks, they cleared the way so that he will get to start for at least the next month. Quarterback Kyler Murray, sidelined for the last three games with a foot injury, was placed on injured reserve.
He now must miss at least the next four games. At minimum, he will miss the games coming up against the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He could come back in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams.
On Tuesday, head coach Jonathan Gannon said the decision was made because it is “the best thing for him and us.”
“He’s not fully healthy, (not) ready to go yet, so that makes the most sense,” Gannon said.
He said that Murray needs to concentrate on “getting healthy.”
“He’s not healthy enough to play. He needs to get healthy so he can get back to playing football.”
While the initial belief was that Murray could return from the foot injury he suffered in Week 5 for the Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys, but multiple reports came out Tuesday that the timeline for recovery was four to eight weeks. Had he played against the Cowboys, it would have been four weeks and a day from when he got hurt. Now he is being forced to use the longer end (eight weeks) to recover.
Gannon said that Murray is “fully committed.”
With Murray on IR, that leaves Jacoby Brissett and Kedon Slovis as the only available quarterbacks on the team. They did not sign anyone to the 53-man roster to replace Murray.
They did open a practice squad spot by releasing offensive lineman Nick Leverett. We can likely expect a quarterback addition on Thursday.
