Alaska Airlines has officially unveiled its new International Business Class product, set to debut this spring aboard its incoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The launch marks a significant step in the carrier’s evolution into a long-haul operator, with initial routes connecting
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to major global destinations including Rome, Seoul, and London. The new cabins feature fully enclosed lie-flat suites, upgraded dining, and premium lounge access, positioning Alaska as a serious contender in the transatlantic and transpacific markets.
The announcement comes as Alaska Airlines celebrates five years as a member of the
oneworld alliance, a partnership that now allows its customers to connect to more than 900 destinations worldwide. With its long-haul ambitions accelerating, the airline is aiming to transform Seattle into a major international gateway while maintaining its distinct West Coast identity and service style.
Inside Alaska’s New Business Class Suites And Premium Experience
At the heart of Alaska’s new long-haul offering is its redesigned Business Class suite installed on the flagship Boeing 787-9. Each seat converts into a fully flat bed and includes a privacy door, direct aisle access, and a spacious layout designed for long-haul comfort. The cabin is equipped with 18-inch HD entertainment screens, wireless charging, personal power outlets, and a library of more than 1,500 entertainment options.
The onboard experience extends well beyond the seat itself. Alaska has introduced a multi-course dining concept inspired by both West Coast cuisine and international destinations. Meals begin with a refined cheese-and-charcuterie service, followed by appetizers and a choice of up to six main courses, with beverages such as craft beer and European wine selection tailored to each route. Signature dishes include regionally inspired options such as pasta on flights to Rome and Korean-influenced dishes on services to Seoul.
Andrew Harrison, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, said in the statement,
“We set out to design a Business Class experience that is both sophisticated and authentically Alaska: premium, comfortable and thoughtfully created for our guests. When we debut our new product this spring, it will raise the bar and redefine long-haul travel, while continuing to deliver the remarkable care that sets Alaska apart on the global stage.”
Seattle–Rome Launch Signals Alaska’s Global Expansion Strategy
The launch of the new Business Class coincides with Alaska Airlines’ first-ever nonstop service between Seattle and Rome, scheduled to begin on April 28. The route represents a milestone for the airline, marking its entry into continental Europe with a flagship long-haul product designed to compete with established global carriers. Flights to London will follow on May 21, with additional expansion planned.
Beyond Rome, Alaska is also strengthening its presence in Asia. Service to Seoul with this class product is set to begin in April, with Tokyo joining the network later in the year. These routes will all benefit from the new 787-9 fleet, allowing the airline to offer a consistent premium experience across long-haul destinations.
In addition to onboard upgrades, Alaska is enhancing the overall journey with expanded lounge access. Business Class passengers will have access to Alaska’s own lounges as well as oneworld partner facilities worldwide. Notably, top-tier oneworld Emerald members will also gain entry to First Class lounges regardless of their ticketed cabin, further elevating the travel experience.
Soft Product Upgrades And Future Enhancements Strengthen Offering
Alaska’s attention to detail has also become evident in its soft product enhancements. The airline has partnered with Pacific Northwest brand Filson to create premium bedding, including a mattress pad, duvet, and multiple pillows. Amenity kits feature Salt & Stone skincare products and come in reusable bags inspired by West Coast design, alongside a custom reusable water bottle developed with PATH Water.
Connectivity is also set to improve, with plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi on the 787-9 fleet starting this fall. The service promises high-speed, gate-to-gate internet access and will be offered free of charge to eligible passengers through Alaska’s partnership with T-Mobile. This move aligns Alaska with a growing number of airlines investing in next-generation connectivity solutions.
While the spotlight is on Business Class, Alaska has also upgraded its Premium Class and Main Cabin offerings on international routes. Passengers in these cabins will receive complimentary meals and Filson-designed blankets and pillows, ensuring a more consistent experience across the aircraft.
As Alaska Airlines embarks on this new chapter, the introduction of its Boeing 787-9 Business Class suites signals a clear strategic shift. By combining modern hardware with its signature service ethos, the airline is aiming to carve out a distinct identity in the competitive long-haul market, one that blends familiar comfort with a newly global reach.
