Alaska Airlines To Build New $135 Million Maintenance Hangar In Portland

Alaska Airlines has been given the green light by the Port of Portland for a ground lease at Portland International Airport (PDX) for a new maintenance hangar. This will see a $135 million investment, which will create more than 100 jobs for local maintenance workers and engineers. Portland is an important hub for Alaska Airlines, where the airline dominates around 40% of all arriving and departing flights (including its Horizon Air subsidiary).

As part of the new maintenance hangar development, it is expected to create around 200 local jobs for construction workers, and add an extra $8.7 million in state and local tax income. The investment by Alaska Airlines is also expected to add around $2 million in annual future state and local taxes. The new hangar is expected to boost regional aviation infrastructure and support the airlines’ aircraft repair efficiencies.

For Alaska, the new maintenance facility will work alongside the existing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities already on the ground, which support the carrier’s regional subsidiary Horizon Air. The agreement, which was approved by the Port on Wednesday, April 8, expects groundbreaking to take place in the summer of 2026, with a build time of around two years.

The new facility will enable faster recovery for aircraft belonging to Alaska Airlines, and cement Portland as a key part of Alaska’s West Coast strategy for decades into the future. The investment by Alaska Airlines is expected to attract local talent, as explained by Port of Portland Chief Aviation Officer Dan Pippenger in the release by FlyPDX:

“The new hangar embodies our strong partnership with Alaska, and our mutual commitment to making our region a place where everyone can thrive. It’s a smart investment in our local talent that’s sure to boost our region’s economy and strengthen our future.”

As already mentioned, Portland is an important hub for Alaska Airlines, and the carrier currently has more than 2,900 employees in the region. The airline serves 62 non-stop destinations from PDX, and caters to flights from Alaska, Horizon, and Hawaiian Airlines. Between August 2024 and July 2025, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Alaska Airlines served more than 6.9 million passengers.

Alaska operates on all the top ten of PDX’s domestic routes, with Denver International Airport (DEN), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airpor (LAS) leading the charge. The busiest international route from PDX is to Vancouver International Airport (YVR), where again Alaska operates alongside Air Canada.

Expansion continues with Alaska Airlines at PDX, with the carrier adding two new year-round services from June 10 to Everett and Tri-Cities, while seasonal services are planned for Baltimore, Idaho Falls, Jackson Hole, Philadelphia, and St Louis, all set to take off by summer.

The busiest airport in the state of Oregon, Portland International Airport, caters to more than 90% of the state’s air travel, and more than 95% of all air cargo. It is located just six miles (10 kilometers) from the Portland city center, and has direct flights across the United States, and international services across North America and Europe.

A unique feature of PDX is that the Port of Portland mandates that all shops and restaurants must practice fair retail pricing, meaning that businesses cannot charge surge pricing at the airport, meaning they cannot charge more than off-airport locations. PDX last year served more than 18 million passengers on more than 177,000 commercial flights. The airport has three runways, as detailed below:
