Following a collaboration with Bape bringing back the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team’s iconic denim jersey from the 1994 World Cup, Adidas is dipping into the same source material for an in-line collection that includes denim sneakers.
The Adidas Samba “USA Denim” features a real denim upper rather than the mere print used on the away jersey. Lighter-colored stars appear throughout the base, while matching indigo suede is used for the T-toe. Leather overlays come in white via the Three Stripes and eysestay, and the material is used once again for the red mustache. Rounding out the shoe is a classic translucent gum cupsole.
Matching treatments also appear on the Superstar and Jabbar Hi — but both sneakers go without red in favor of white.
Before Nike took over in 1995, Adidas produced Team USA’s kits for the ’94 World Cup hosted in the country. Peter Moore, who previously worked at Nike and was responsible for the Air Jordan 1, designed the kit and chose the faux-denim look to represent the American West. The standout look was widely mocked at the time, even by the players that wore it, but over time has become more widely regarded.
The away kit didn’t feature a denim print but used wavy red and white stripes to complete the flag theme.
The Bape collaboration from February brought back the jersey with its own logo replacing the Team USA mark and as a long sleeve. Adidas then brought back the short-sleeve version this week and with no mark at all in place of the formal national callout.
The Adidas Samba, Superstar and Jabbar Hi “USA Denim” are out now through Adidas’ website and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $110, $120 and $110, respectively.
