A New A380 Hub? Etihad Is The 5th Airline Flying To This City

Etihad Airways has announced its plans to deploy the Airbus A380 on its popular route from its main hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Thailand. The carrier’s superjumbos will begin serving this route in October, representing a significant capacity boost.

This move is also a significant one as far as the destination airport is concerned, with Etihad set to be the fifth airline to fly the Airbus A380 to and from Bangkok this year. The diversity and prevalence of various carriers’ superjumbos in the Thai capital are votes of confidence for what, according to Aviation A2Z, is the most visited city in the world. Let’s take a look at the finer details of Etihad’s A380 addition in Bangkok, and what it means.

As confirmed by the airline in a statement released earlier today, Etihad Airways will begin flying its Airbus A380 double-decker widebody quadjets from Abu Dhabi International to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport this October. The first of these superjumbo-operated services will hit the skies on October 25, with EY402 taking off from Abu Dhabi International at 9:20 pm and landing at Bangkok Airport the following morning at 6:35 am local time.

After a two-hour turnaround, Etihad Airways flight EY403 is then scheduled to leave Bangkok at 8:30 am, with its arrival back into Abu Dhabi planned for 12:20 pm local time. These flights will operate daily, and will represent a considerable capacity boost, given that, according to present fleet data made available by aeroLOPA, Etihad’s A380s can seat up to 488 passengers. Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, said that:

“With the A380 flying to Bangkok, we’re offering greater choice and significant additional capacity on one of our most popular leisure routes. Guests can immerse themselves in Thailand’s beaches and vibrant city life.”

While Etihad Airways’ deployment of the Airbus A380 on its route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok is certainly a source of excitement, the superjumbo will actually only represent a fraction of its overall capacity on this corridor. Indeed, present scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that Bangkok is one of the carrier’s top Asian destinations, with between four and six flights a day this February.

This underlines not only the scale of the demand that the UAE flag carrier faces on its flights to and from the capital city of Thailand, but also the diverse range of passenger demographics served by this route. Indeed, the overnight rotation set to be operated by the A380 is well-suited to business flyers, who can start a whole day of work on arrival, but, elsewhere, the range of departure times represents a good fit for connecting leisure travelers.

There is also considerable variety as far as the various jets that Etihad Airways used to serve its route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok are concerned. Indeed, according to Cirium, no fewer than five different aircraft types will be deployed on the 146 rotations serving this corridor in February of 2026: 67 will use the Boeing 777-300ER, followed by 46 with the 787-9, 16 with the Airbus A321neo, 13 with the 787-10, and four with the A350-1000.

Once Etihad Airways begins flying the Airbus A380 to Bangkok, it will be the fifth carrier to deploy the type to the Thai capital this year, a notably high total given that hometown flag carrier Thai Airways no longer operates the superjumbo. Emirates is the top operator on this front, with 112 rotations from Dubai International (DXB) to Bangkok penciled in this month. Of these, 28 (one a day) continue to Hong Kong International (HKG).

Fellow Middle Eastern heavyweight Qatar Airways also sends multiple superjumbos to Bangkok every day, with either two or three departures adding up to a monthly total of 78 rotations. Meanwhile, Lufthansa (from Munich) and Asiana Airlines (from Seoul Incheon) both operate a single daily A380 flight to Bangkok.
