A Blue World Thinks Seaweed Fabrics Are the Next Frontier for Fashion


LONDON — Could blue be the new color of sustainability? The founders of A Blue World, a new platform supporting marine, bio-based innovation and development, are hoping so.

The platform’s aim is to support and promote research into marine-based, biomaterials designed to replace petrochemicals across fashion, beauty, wellness and other industries.

The founders also want to scale those innovations, creating sustainable, low-impact consumer goods ranging from luxury textiles to baby diapers to skin care products.

Cofounders Christopher Suarez, Baptiste Auzéau, Athina Karamalis and Julia von Boehm believe the next material era will be “regenerative by design, functional, nonfossil-based and driven to deliver better solutions for human health and well-being.”

They also believe new ideas and materials will come from “working with living systems, not extracting from them.”

Suarez, a fashion entrepreneur and chief executive officer of A Blue World, said that all too often groundbreaking research into sustainable materials goes nowhere because investors don’t have the time, money or patience to scale quickly enough, or find the right ways to apply it.

A Blue World aims to be the connector between cutting-edge research and the consumer. It wants to help young companies “work on marine-based innovations at lab level,” and then use the new ideas “to create incredible products around the consumer,” Suarez said.

Marine plants and minerals, he argued, are the raw materials of the future because they’re abundant, nutrient-dense and versatile. They can be used in textiles, but also in cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals and industrial applications, such as bioadhesives and biopolymers.

Earlier this year, A Blue World bought Smartfiber, a German manufacturer that specializes in fusing cellulose fibers with marine plants, such as organic brown seaweed, to create yarns and textiles that are rich in minerals, antioxidants and vitamins, and gentle on the skin.

One of Smartfiber’s patented fibers, Seacell, is 100 percent biodegradable and compostable, and used for everything from underwear and loungewear to soft furnishings.

Labels that work with breathable, low-impact Seacell textiles include the New York-based, B-Corp-certified Another Tomorrow, and Sylva, the clothing brand founded by Tallulah Harlech.

Harlech launched Sylva in response to her own severe psoriasis and describes it as a “skin-first, eco-sourced” clothing label.

A Blue World is rapidly building a community.

It is working with a team of strategic investors and advisers including fashion veterans Thierry Andretta, Holli Rogers, Francesco Giannaccari and Sylvie Freund-Pickavance.

The platform is also working with a variety of companies ranging from fashion to everyday consumer brands to develop and scale marine-based materials and products.

It has a host of innovation partners, too, including Fabrican Ltd., which makes nonwoven, spray-on fabric for clothes, medical patches and hygiene wipes.

While most people may not have heard of Fabrican, or its founder Dr. Manel Torres, they will know his work.

It was Torres who sprayed a dress onto a near-naked Bella Hadid during the finale of Coperni’s runway show in September 2022. Once the white dress was dry, an attendant rolled down her sleeves, snipped off the hem and slashed the skirt to finish off the look.

The Fabrican fabric consists of short fibers bound together with polymers and biopolymers. Greener solvents deliver the fabric in liquid form, then evaporate when the spray reaches a surface.

Fabrican continues to explore the uses of its fabric technology in the clothing, health care, automotive, packaging and building products fields.
