The latest from the federal lobbyist registry.
Cross-border tensions remain on the political agenda and it shows in this week’s federal lobbying wrap, especially in the agricultural sector.
The filings coincide with a visit to Ottawa by U.S. Senator Adam Schiff this week, who met with Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and parliamentarians, to discuss about ways to limit the economic damage on both sides of the border. During the senator’s visit, Schiff said tariffs and disruptions linked to the war in Iran have driven up farmers’ input costs, including fertilizer.
One Canadian beef company, Bank Brothers Sustainable Ingredients, is also seeking clarity on whether a product labelled as ground beef for export to the U.S. can carry the same label at home.
The company’s registration raises questions about how federal standards apply to its processing methods, the consistency of government guidance and the treatment of domestic versus imported products.
Labelling is also a concern for Canadian cattle producers watching developments south of the border. The Canadian Cattle Association warned last month that the potential return of mandatory U.S. country-of-origin labelling for beef would add costs and disrupt the integrated North American market.
Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reported that slaughter cattle price rose year over year last week in every province except Quebec.
