The Mummy Officially Returns in 1 Year — Now With a New Cryptic Title

Mark your calendars, because the 27-year-old The Mummy franchise officially returns exactly one year from today. To mark the occasion, Universal Pictures finally revealed the title for the next The Mummy movie.

Now called The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the sequel will hit theaters Oct. 15, 2027

The Mummy: Book of the Dead will reunite Rachel Weisz’s Evie Carnahan and Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell after Weisz (wisely) sat out the third film and Evie was recast with Maria Bello taking on the role. Recent set photos of a very stylish Weisz have indicated that Book of the Dead might take place in the late 1950s. Other photos have shown Fraser’s new look as O’Connell. But, now that the official title has been revealed, there’s still one major question we’re wondering.

Will The Mummy: Book of the Dead rehash Imhotep’s story again?

The first two The Mummy movies center around titular mummy Imhotep and his attempts at coming back to life. He’s resurrected via the Book of the Dead, so the subtitle for the next movie highly implies he’ll be a key figure in The Mummy: Book of the Dead.

Add in the fact that Oded Fehr is returning as Ardeth Bay, and it seems all but certain Imhotep will play a role, though official plot details for the next movie have yet to be shared. Ardeth Bay leads the Medjai, a group of warriors whose whole deal is to make sure Imhotep stays dead. Presumably, if Bay is around, then someone might be trying to bring Imhotep back to life (hey, third time’s the charm), like, say Beni… who seemingly died in the first movie. Kevin J. O’Connor is reprising his role as Beni for Book of the Dead, so maybe Beni’s not dead after all, and instead doing Imhotep’s bidding again.

Imhotep’s actor Arnold Vosloo hasn’t officially been confirmed to reprise his role, but earlier this year John Hannah (Jonathan Carnahan) said Vosloo would be back. We’ll learn more the closer we get to The Mummy: Book of the Dead‘s release and as trailers get released for it. Until then, time to watch 1999’s The Mummy for the 100th time.
