Netflix’s ‘Untold’ series to drop new documentary on the Daejon Love 49ers impersonation scandal

The Daejon Love scandal is coming to Netflix.

The streaming giant announced plans on Wednesday for a new documentary featuring the man who portrayed himself as a San Francisco 49ers player to defraud several women out of more than $1.3 million.

It’s unclear when the documentary, which is part of the “Untold” series and will be titled “Wide Deceiver,” will be released. But the story, Netflix said, is going to be told firsthand by Love’s victims and “will unpack the internet nickname and the far darker story it exposed.”

Love, 35, was arrested in August alongside 18-year-old Taylor Chan in the scandal. The duo were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Officials said that Love repeatedly posed as a 49ers player or a wealthy real estate investor for years, and that the pair targeted women through dating apps to eventually defraud them out of money. Victims sent them money with the intent that it would be deployed for fruitful investments, prosecutors said.

Initially, officials said that the pair had exploited 26 people of more than $1.3 million across California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Last month, however, federal investigators said they had identified an additional 35 women who said they were defrauded by Love and Chan, and they believe there are even more victims out there.

One woman, Gwen Herndon, said she even reached out to the 49ers about Love in December, about eight months before he was arrested. She wrote a message through the team’s “complaint/concern” form submission. Herndon filed a lawsuit against Love in small claims civil court in Oregon last year after she said she gave Love $10,000 for an investment idea. Once she started asking questions and for her money back, however, she said Love blocked her.

The “Untold” series has been around for years now, and started with a documentary on the infamous “Malice and the Palace” brawl between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons in 2004. The series has covered a variety of topics throughout the sports world since then.

Even though Love was only arrested a few months ago, Netflix is moving fast here. But with how the Daejon Love story spread on social media after the scandal was revealed, it’s easy to see why.
