American Airlines Cancels 4 Major Long-Haul Nonstop Routes: See Full List Now

American Airlines has cut a total of four long-haul international routes from its network this year, with many of the routes now handed over to competing airlines. The Fort Worth-based airline, which is otherwise one of the largest in the world by total number of passengers served, has stopped flying on nonstop routes to certain destinations in Australia, Qatar, France and Switzerland.

Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, highlights the oneworld carrier’s exit from Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH), Brisbane Airport (BNE), Zurich Airport (ZRH), and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG). These moves come as part of ongoing seasonal demand shifts and improved aircraft utilization.

Perhaps the most alarming was the airline’s decision to cut its service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Brisbane, the largest city in the Australian state of Queensland, after just two months. This leaves Qantas as the only year-round operator on the city pair, while Delta adds nonstop flights throughout the Southern Hemisphere summer season.

Regional geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also ultimately cost American’s nonstop service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Doha. Ongoing escalating regional conflict continues to raise safety and security concerns for airlines. This saw American axe its service from Philadelphia, leaving the route to alliance partner Qatar Airways, which is now the sole operator on the city pair.

Miami To Paris Cut, Dallas/Fort Worth To Zurich Now Operating Seasonally

This March, American axed its nonstop service from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Paris. This came after seasonal transatlantic demand changed, and the airline saw the need to shelve its service to the City of Love just before the busy summer season. This has left Air France as the only operator on the route, despite indirect competition from French Bee, which also operates flights to Paris’ second airport, Paris Orly (ORY).

Left unserved

The only route that is now left unserved is American’s nonstop flight from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Zurich. The route was shifted to a seasonal service across the Northern Hemisphere summer season. However, it now shows no future schedule confirmed, even for 2027.

Despite being the world’s largest operator by number of flights, American ranks in third place for long-haul services from the United States. As analyzed by Simple Flying, next summer the airline will average around 78 long-haul flight departures each day. The airline’s long-haul network stretches to the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and South America.

Across the last two decades, the airline has exited a total of 13 European airports. These include London Gatwick (LGW), London Stansted (STN), Moscow Domodedovo (DME), Helsinki (HEL), Brussels (BRU), Düsseldorf (DUS), Birmingham (BHX), Glasgow (GLA), Berlin Tegel (TXL), Bologna (BLQ), Dubrovnik (DBV), Shannon (SNN), and Manchester (MAN). You can read more about the airline’s network changes here.

South America also hasn’t been unscathed, with 11 routes abolished to destinations including Recife (REC), Salvador (SSA), Asunción (ASU), Curitiba (CWB), Porto Alegre (POA), São Paulo Viracopos/Campinas (VCP), Belo Horizonte (CNF), La Paz (LPB), Santa Cruz (VVI), Brasília (BSB), and Córdoba (COR). Meanwhile, in Asia, services have been dropped to Beijing Capital (PEK), Doha (DOH), Hong Kong (HKG), and Osaka Kansai (KIX).
