Coming soon to Invincible VS, it’s your copyright-friendly neighbourhood Agent Spider

Spider-Man might be one of the most parodied characters of all time, simply due to also being one of the most well-known characters of anything, well, ever. Everyone knows who Spider-Man is. Invincible VS’ latest trailer plays into this cleverly, with the reveal of Agent Spider as an upcoming DLC character making frequent allusions to his Marvel counterpart.

In the Invincible TV show, Agent Spider shows up while Invincible himself is being tossed through dimensions by villain Angstrom Levy to essentially waste his time. One of these portals lands him in a version of presumably New York City, coming face to face with Agent Spider and mechanical-armed Professor Ock — both legally distinct, obviously. They exchange a few quips, during which it becomes clear that Agent Spider is voiced by none other than Josh Keaton, who’s voiced Spidey in a lot of things, including but not limited to: the Spectacular Spider-Man TV series, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and most recently, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. It really is one of those ‘Leonardo diCaprio points at screen’ moments once you recognise his voice, and it’s gracefully over before it can become a grating homage.

In the comics, though, Invincible’s thrown through that portal and into the actual Spider-Man (and quite literally into the back of Doc Ock). Invincible creator Robert Kirkman wrote 2005’s Marvel Team-Up Vol. 3 #14, which sees the full-length aftermath of that dimension hop. It’s actually quite an earnest issue, as Spidey comes to realise Invincible can only be a good guy since he apologised to Doc Ock for smashing into him and asks if he’s okay, and the two discuss their powers, their pasts, and why they do what they do. Invincible also tries to make fun of Spider-Man for the simplicity of his name, at which point Spidey quite fairly throws it right back at him for naming himself Invincible; “Do you think my name should be ‘Webbing? Would that be cooler?”

Obviously, Amazon weren’t about to pay up to Disney for the rights to Spider-Man to appear in the TV show, so Agent Spider was created as a substitute. I have to appreciate the willingness to hold their hands up and say “look, you know this is Spider-Man, we know this is Spider-Man, let’s just get Josh Keaton in and call it a day.” There are no details for how Agent Spider will play in Invincible VS, but I’m curious to see if another web-slinging arachnid ends up top tier, as Spidey still remains in Tōkon.
