Air Tahiti All First Class ATR-72 Begins Epic 6-Day, 9-Airport Journey From France To Tahiti

The newest ATR 72-600 for Air Tahiti is embarking on an extraordinary six-day journey from France to French Polynesia, covering approximately 14,455 miles (23,263 km) and visiting nine airports along the way. Registered F-OPFO, the aircraft is no ordinary regional turboprop, featuring an exclusive 26-seat, all-business-class cabin designed for wealthy travelers visiting some of the South Pacific’s most luxurious destinations.

The delivery flight will take the aircraft from Toulouse to Tahiti via the Middle East, Asia and Australia before crossing the Pacific Ocean to its new home at Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete. Once there, the aircraft will begin operating much shorter services connecting Tahiti with Bora Bora and Raiatea, offering a premium experience on flights lasting as little as 20 minutes.

The aircraft’s delivery journey begins at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) in southern France, home to manufacturer ATR. According to the ferry itinerary provided for F-OPFO, the aircraft will make seven intermediate stops en-route to PPT, starting with Cairo International Airport (CAI) and continuing through Muscat, Hyderabad, Subang, Lombok, Cairns and Nadi. The journey spans eight separate flights, an enormous undertaking for an aircraft designed primarily for short regional services.

Eight sectors, nine airports

The first five sectors carry the aircraft through the Middle East and Southeast Asia before reaching the Indonesian island of Lombok. From there, the journey becomes particularly interesting, with three lengthy flights across open water. Lombok to Cairns Airport (CNS) covers approximately 2,063 miles (3,319 km), followed by Cairns to Nadi Airport (NAN) at 2,092 miles (3,366 km). The final flight, between Fiji and French Polynesia, is the longest of the entire journey at approximately 2,170 miles (3,492 km). These figures represent great-circle distances, meaning the aircraft’s actual flight paths could be longer.

What makes the journey particularly remarkable is the ATR 72-600’s published range of just 851 miles (1,370 km) carrying its maximum passenger load. However, that figure does not represent an absolute range limit. ATR’s technical documentation for a lightly loaded, 30-passenger HighLine aircraft indicates a range of approximately 2,094 miles (3,370 km), demonstrating how dramatically reduced payload can extend endurance. F-OPFO’s unusually long ferry sectors will therefore require carefully planned fuel reserves, weather conditions, and routing.

The aircraft’s interior is almost as extraordinary as its delivery journey. Whereas Air Tahiti’s conventional ATR 72-600s accommodate 68 passengers, the new aircraft has just 26 business-class seats. These are arranged in 13 rows of 1-1 seating, so every passenger enjoys both a window and direct aisle access. The aircraft also features a distinctive Polynesian-inspired livery named Ānapanapa, celebrating the islands’ traditions of navigation and craftsmanship.

The cabin is fitted with ETEREA seats manufactured by Italy’s Geven, measuring 21.6 inches (55 cm) wide, with 39 inches (99 cm) of pitch and 7 inches (18 cm) of recline. Each passenger receives a personal side console, dedicated storage and USB-A and USB-C charging ports. An executive-style ceiling with no overhead bins creates a more open atmosphere, while entertainment is accessible through personal devices. Air Tahiti Signature will also offer dedicated lounges in Tahiti and Bora Bora, priority ground handling, and personalized onboard hospitality, creating a premium experience extending beyond the flight itself.

Air Tahiti is only the second airline to introduce ATR’s HighLine All-Business Class configuration, following Malaysia’s Berjaya Air earlier this year. The HighLine concept, unveiled in 2023, allows operators to configure ATR aircraft for premium services rather than conventional high-density regional flying. Options include business-class layouts and private aviation-inspired interiors. Air Tahiti selected the configuration for one of four ATR 72-600s ordered in 2024, extending a partnership with the Franco-Italian manufacturer that dates back nearly four decades. The aircraft is expected to operate both scheduled services and charter missions.

Why Air Tahiti Is Launching Luxury Island-Hopping Flights

Once F-OPFO reaches French Polynesia, its extraordinary ferry flights will be replaced by much shorter journeys linking Papeete with Bora Bora and Raiatea-Taha’a. Air Tahiti Signature was originally scheduled to begin on December 8, but reservations have since opened for services starting November 11. The initial schedule includes five weekly morning triangular services operating Papeete–Bora Bora–Raiatea–Papeete, with additional afternoon rotations and nonstop Bora Bora flights. Individual sectors range from just 20 minutes between Bora Bora and Raiatea to approximately 55 minutes between Papeete and Bora Bora.

The airline’s decision reflects the importance of luxury tourism to French Polynesia, particularly Bora Bora, where exclusive resorts and overwater villas attract affluent international visitors. Passengers arriving after long-haul business-class journeys have traditionally transferred to conventional regional aircraft for the final stage of their trips. Air Tahiti Signature offers an alternative, maintaining a premium experience throughout the journey. The airline’s wider network covers 47 destinations in French Polynesia, while its developing codeshare partnership with Air Tahiti Nui provides further opportunities to connect international visitors with domestic flights.

However, the commercial proposition is unusual. With 26 seats rather than 68, Air Tahiti must generate substantially higher revenue per passenger to match the ticket revenue of a conventional aircraft operating at the same load factor. Premium fares, exclusive charters and partnerships serving luxury travelers will be crucial to compensate for the reduced capacity. So after completing its six-day journey across much of the world, F-OPFO will begin testing whether a luxury cabin can be commercially successful on flights lasting as little as 20 minutes.
