Arriving on Disney+ October 14th with the first two episodes (and six following one per week), ‘VisionQuest’ looks to wrap up the story begun with 2021’s ‘WandaVision’ and continued via 2024’s ‘Agatha All Along.’

Created and showrun by Terry Matalas (‘Star Trek: Picard’), the series sees the return of Paul Bettany (‘Avengers: Infinity War’) as Vision, James Spader (‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’) as Ultron and James D’Arcy (‘Agent Carter’) with new recruits Ruaridh Mollica (‘A Thousand Blows’) and Todd Stashwick (‘12 Monkeys’).

Initial Thoughts

‘WandaVision’ launched Marvel’s Disney+ ambitions with a compelling, emotional look at grief and power. ‘Agatha All Along’ took one that show’s main antagonist and explored her further, and now here comes ‘VisionQuest’ to do the same with the other half of the original series’ (and the wider MCU) main characters: Paul Bettany’s “synthezoid,” Vision.
And in the hands of Terry Matalas, his writing team, directors and cast, it delivers a superior superhero series that stands proudly alongside ‘WandaVision.’
Script and Direction

Though Matalas and crew do occasionally divert down cliched superhero CG/punch fests, they are utilized to drive the character stories along, but for the most part, this is a thoughtful, well-executed meditation on parenthood, family ties, the dangers of unchecked AI and more, as crafted as ‘WandaVision.’
Visually stylish and often inventive, it’s one of the better shows that Marvel has put out, sliding easily into second place in this particular trilogy.
Cast and Performances

Bettany naturally works well what the writers give him, and Vision is never less than sympathetic and engaging. Spader, meanwhile, is given full scope to chew the scenery, delivering full-on snark and drama.
T’Nia Miller (‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’) is excellent as someone with her own agenda (no spoilers here!), while the likes of Emily Hampshire (‘Schitt’s Creek’), Orla Brady (‘The Foreigner’) and James D’Arcy –– here playing the AI avatar of original Stark Butler Jarvis –– all deliver.
Final Thoughts

‘VisionQuest’ stretches the boundaries of what a superhero show can be, offering some deep thoughts amidst all the action. It’s powered by solid scripts and great performances.
‘VisionQuest’ receives 78 out of 100.
