Bill van Zyll, vice president and general manager of Nintendo Latin America, has stated that the company currently has “no plans to ditch physical” media.
This comes via an interview with Coelho no Japão on YouTube (thanks Nintendo Everything) at a time in which physical media is more at risk than ever. With Sony confirming its plan to cease production of PlayStation discs in early 2028 and Microsoft likely to follow suit, questions have no undoubtedly lingered as to whether Nintendo will also go all-digital. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case… at least for now.
Here’s what Bill van Zyll had to say:
“Historically, we’ve been very agnostic, right? We go off of what the consumer prefers, and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that just launched. We’re barely just over a year into NS2. And it’s got both digital, but it also has physical, that capability.
“There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic.”
Of course, Nintendo’s current position might not necessarily be valid in a handful of years. The thing with Sony especially is that it’s almost six years into the PS5, and it’s clearly gearing up to transition to the PS6 over the next year or two. So it’s easier to see why it made its decision to ditch physical media, controversial as it is.
With the Switch 2 being just over a year old, it makes no sense for Nintendo to indicate any willingness to go all-digital at this stage. It will no doubt be keeping an eye on how sales are looking in the years to come, but we don’t think fans of physical media have any reason to worry for the time being.
