Hermione Corfield on Season Two of ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’

Hermione Corfield is bending time but still doing her best to remain present.

The 32-year-old British actress stars in “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” the prequel to cult-favorite Starz series “Outlander.” The show chronicles the origin story and forbidden romance of original characters Jamie and Claire’s parents: Ellen and Brian, and Henry and Julia, respectively. Julia, played by Corfield, is tasked with the dubious endeavor of time traveling between WWI England and 18th-century Scotland without being exposed.

“What is unique about ‘Outlander’ is that, obviously, there’s two time periods,” Corfield says. “So, it adds a whole other layer to it of what’s it like to be a woman from World War I period, England and Scotland in the 1700s. What does that look like?”

Corfield is no stranger to period pieces having previously starred in “The Road Dance” and “The Halcyon.”

“I enjoy period dramas. The research is really fun, [and] the costumes obviously. When you put on those costumes in the morning, you’re immediately in the character,” she says.

In taking on this character, Corfield is contending with the lived experiences, interpersonal relationships and precarious social choreography of a woman existing between two worlds and doing her best to survive.

“It’s an intense acting exercise,” she says. “It’s an interesting thing to play — to be a woman from the 1920s and the 1700s. I think that the key to it is that she always feels slightly like she’s not quite meant to be in that world, however that translates in each scene.”

While modernity has its unique challenges, there’s also a degree of levity it affords that isn’t as accessible in the earlier time periods.

“Someone said that Julia in WWI is so much funner than Julia in 1700 Scotland, and I agree with that,” Corfield says. “You know I think there’s such a heaviness to her situation in the 1700s. When I’m in that time period, it’s always thinking about the stakes always seem to be at about 10.”

Now in her second season with the show, Corfield feels more reassured with the demands of the role and the world they are building.

“Whenever you start a show or any job, you’re working out who the character is, the tone of the film, everything’s sort of aligning in those first weeks, and then you get into a good rhythm,” she says. And I think that’s for season two, there’s new characters this season, but on the whole everything’s pretty familiar. So then you go, what’s next for the character? How can I push this area or how can I make this bit different?”

As she continues to develop the essence of her character, Corfield is focused on keeping herself grounded and quieting outside noise.

“I never read reviews, so I don’t know what the reviews are saying, but I’ve seen nice comments, and there’s been some nice responses to episode one,” she says. “Someone said to me, ‘If you believe the good, you believe the bad.’ I think that’s sort of my angle on it.”

She avoids TikTok for fear of becoming addicted, instead staying old school with her consuption.

“My mum used to just copy and paste entire articles and text them to me,” she says. “Luckily the nice ones only.”
