Report: Alex Cora could be lured back to manage by only one team in 2027 says MLB insider

Alex Cora has made it clear he plans to step away from managing in the 2027 MLB season after turning down another opportunity with the Philadelphia Phillies. However, one MLB insider believes one team could change Cora’s mind — the New York Yankees.

Former Red Sox manager Alex Cora told the Phillies that he is taking next season off, but someone who knows him closely speculated that if one team could lure him back earlier, that could be the Yankees, per @JonHeyman. https://t.co/NkZpin9mvz

Jon Heyman of the New York Post suggested that possibility while making the case that the Yankees should move on from manager Aaron Boone following another disappointing postseason. Heyman’s column centers on the Yankees’ need for a change in leadership, but the discussion also creates an intriguing potential connection to Cora.

Yankees could be the one exception for Cora

Cora reportedly told Philadelphia that he plans to take the 2027 season off, with family reasons playing a major role in his decision. The former Boston Red Sox manager is also preparing for his wedding in November and remains under contract with Boston for more than $7 million in 2027.

Still, Heyman raised the possibility that the Yankees could potentially be the one team capable of luring Cora back into a dugout if the right circumstances develop.

That would obviously require Cora to reconsider his plans, but the Yankees present a unique opportunity. Cora has extensive experience managing in the American League East and has already won a World Series with Boston in 2018. He finished his Red Sox tenure with a 620-541 record across two stints.

The biggest variable is Boone. Heyman’s latest column argues that the Yankees should move on from their longtime manager after another season that ended without a championship. New York has now gone nine consecutive seasons without winning the World Series during Boone’s tenure.

Boone still has one year remaining on his contract, and other reporting indicates the Yankees could ultimately retain him for 2027. But if New York does decide to make a managerial change, Cora would suddenly become one of the most fascinating names connected to the opening.

For now, Cora’s stated intention remains to sit out 2027. But if there is one scenario that could potentially change his mind, Heyman’s reporting suggests the Yankees may be the team to watch.
