I am not a huge fan of collaboration DLCs, mostly because my curmudgeonly self can only see them as attempts at multiple companies trying to profit off of one another’s things. But I do have to admit that yes, the just announced collab between Dave the Diver and Subnautica 2 does make total sense. Certainly more sense than the Godzilla one from a couple of years back.
Details are a touch slim on the collab, but a reveal trailer does show off a few details. For one, the titular Dave is able to hop through a portal to Subnautica 2’s ocean moon, complete with the alien sealife found in that game. That extends right through to Subnautica 2’s cthulhian Leviathan, which doesn’t seem best pleased to see Dave. To be fair, Dave probably wants to turn it into a nice filet, so I don’t blame it honestly.

In a statement, Mintrocket studio director Jaeho Hwang said, “Both games are set underwater, but Subnautica has such a distinct approach to underwater exploration, so working with the Subnautica 2 team gave us a chance to bring a new wave to Dave the Diver experience.” Subnautica 2 creative director Anthony Gallegos shared some words on the collab too: “It’s clear that we both adore one another’s games a lot, and the expansion is a love letter to both Dave the Diver and the Subnautica universe. People are in for a treat.”
No word if Dave will be making a counter appearance in Subnautica 2, though this doesn’t feel particularly surprising given the fact that the latter is still in early access. Speaking of, the alien diving game’s most recent update arrived in August, bringing the highly sought after feature of proximity chat with it. A new dev vlog series is set to start this month, potentially bringing word of the game’s 2.0 early access update, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
