Biologique Recherche’s CEO Has Left, Sources Say

PARIS – Big changes are afoot at cult French skin care brand Biologique Recherche.

Its chief executive officer Jean-Guillaume Trottier has recently exited the company he has led since January 2024, according to industry sources.

A Biologique Recherche spokeswoman had no comment Thursday.

It is believed that Rupert Schmid and Pierre-Louis Delapalme have stepped back into operational positions at the company, serving now as co-CEOs on an interim basis. Each is also a vice chairman of the brand’s supervisory board.

Biologique Recherche, which has a flagship institute on Paris’ Avenue des Champs-Élysées, is also believed to have kicked off a sales process.

The company spokeswoman had no comment on that information either.

The news comes amid a spike in investor interest in clinical skin care; a rise in the number of aesthetic procedures; and an intensified focus on wellness following the pandemic.

Biologique Recherche received its last major investment seven years ago. In October 2019, three European family offices – the Van Rappard family, Christopher Descours and the Frère family – and Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Nestlé’s former CEO, signed on as long-term strategic partners. Philippe Allouche, the company founder’s son, was to continue as head of creation.

The year prior to that, Biologique Recherche had generated sales of about 40 million euros, according to industry sources. Today, it is believed the company generates approximately 150 million in sales annually.

Trottier’s mission was to bring the 40-plus-year-old brand into its next chapter by returning to what made the brand’s market debut disruptive – personalization, biotechnology, innovation and a novel approach to retail.

Established in the 1970s, Biologique Recherche was founded by Yvan and Josette Allouche, a biologist and a physiotherapist, as a research-and-development operation to create treatments and formulate products for professionals. Its business has grown internationally, and now sells in 74 countries.

Last month, the brand opened its first New York City flagship, marking its fourth location in the U.S. and Biologique Recherche’s 11th globally. Over the last year, it added 40 new doors to its retail footprint in the U.S. through debuts at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and others.
