Future of sport, budget bill and food security on the agenda


What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

After getting a briefing from a former special advisor to the Commission on the Future of Sport in Canada earlier this week, CANADIAN HERITAGE members continue to explore the final report , which was delivered to the government earlier this year, during a one-hour back-and-forth with Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden. (11 a.m.)

Over at FINANCE, MPs are booked in for back-to-back presentations on Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s latest bid to roll out measures announced in his inaugural budget, with representatives of Ecojustice Canada, March of Dimes Canada, United Way Centreaide Canada, Mortgage Professionals Canada, Mining Association of Canada and the National Apartment Council on the witness list. (10 a.m.)

Meanwhile, their colleagues at JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS are going through the fine print of the government’s pitch to establish the Financial Crimes Agency, which was also listed in last year’s budget, with expert testimony from legal and financial system experts, as well as law enforcement, on deck today. (8:15 a.m.)

VETERANS AFFAIRS members have blocked off an hour to go through the contents of the latest supplementary estimates with Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight, who will be joined at the table by her deputy minister, Nancy Gardiner, and a full contingent of senior departmental officials. (8:15 a.m.)

Also this morning: INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS members explore “affordability challenges in Northern Canada” with representatives of Housing Northwest Territories, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Uquutaq Society and the North West Company, among others. (8:15 a.m.)

Rounding out the morning roster, HUMAN RESOURCES members survey representatives of the construction and contracting sectors on Liberal MP Parm Bains’ backbench proposal to “establish a national framework on skilled trades and labour mobility.” (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, INTERNATIONAL TRADE members will hear from Canadians fur Nuclear Energy, Vision Marine Technologies and Trottier Energy Institute scientific director Normand Mousseau, as well as officials with the Canadian Commercial Corporation, Export Development Canada and Vale Base Metals, as they take a closer look at “clean energy, clean technology and critical mineral exports.” (3:30 p.m.)

ENMRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT members get an update on energy retrofits from Transition Accelerator CEO Moe Kabbara, EfficiencyOne interim COO Robert Burns and Aryze Developments managing principal Luke Mari, as well as the Canadian Gas Association, Regroupement des organismes environnementaux en énergie and scientist Art Hunter, designer and operator of the Manotick Microgrid. (3:30 p.m.)

AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD members circle back to their ongoing study of “food security in the face of global insecurity” with representatives of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, Canadian Produce Marketing Association, Restaurants Canada and Navandale Farm co-owners Wyatt and Cheryl McWilliams. (3:30 p.m.)

GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES members hear from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre veterans program chief Jocelyn Charles and MacDonald-Laurier Institute Fellow Richard Shimooka as part of a House-assigned examination of the “use of underused and surplus federal lands and buildings for services for veterans.” (3:30 p.m.)

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH members continue to review the final report from the External Advisory Panel on the Creation and Dissemination of Scientific Information in French, which urges the government to “strengthen Canadian research governance” and provide a “new dedicated investment of $40 million per year.” (3:30 p.m.)
