Southwest Becomes 1st US Airline To Bring Flight Booking Directly Into ChatGPT

Southwest Airlines has become the first US airline to bring its flight-shopping experience directly into ChatGPT, allowing travelers to search Southwest destinations, compare fares, and refine itineraries without initially visiting the carrier’s website. The new Southwest plugin, launched October 6, represents the first phase of a broader artificial intelligence strategy being developed with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.

The feature does not yet complete the entire transaction inside ChatGPT. After selecting a flight, customers are transferred to Southwest.com to enter passenger and payment information and finalize the reservation. The launch therefore changes where customers begin the booking process rather than eliminating the airline’s website altogether. It also currently supports cash fares, but not Rapid Rewards award bookings.

Southwest’s plugin allows travelers to describe a trip conversationally and receive Southwest flight options within the ChatGPT interface. Customers can search across the airline’s network, then modify dates, filter departure times, and restrict results to nonstop flights. Results include Southwest’s four fare categories: Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred, and Choice Extra. Travelers can compare the differences between those products, including their respective inclusions and the number of Rapid Rewards points associated with each cash ticket. Southwest Chief Digital and Marketing Officer Sabrina Callahan described the initiative as part of the airline’s effort to adapt to changing travel-planning behavior.

The approach changes the first step of airline shopping. Instead of opening Southwest.com and entering airport codes into a conventional booking engine, a customer can begin with a natural-language request and narrow the choices through follow-up questions. Testing by Upgraded Points found that fares displayed through the plugin matched prices on Southwest’s website. The itinerary information also carried over when the customer selected the option to continue to Southwest.com.

Despite the headline surrounding direct booking, customers cannot currently complete a Southwest purchase entirely within ChatGPT. Selecting an itinerary produces a “Continue on Southwest.com” option, which transfers the traveler to the airline’s website with the selected flight details populated. Passenger information and payment are then entered through Southwest’s existing booking environment. The arrangement means the plugin functions primarily as a discovery and shopping channel, rather than a complete reservation system operating inside ChatGPT.

Several limitations remain. The tool currently displays cash fares rather than flights available through Rapid Rewards points, so travelers seeking award space must continue to search directly through Southwest. ChatGPT also does not transfer customers into a logged-in Southwest session, meaning Rapid Rewards account information and associated benefits are not automatically connected.

The plugin also cannot be used to book children between ages 5 and 17 who are traveling alone. Those reservations require Southwest’s existing booking channels. For customers accustomed to Southwest’s website, the immediate benefit is therefore convenience during the search phase. The airline has removed some friction from discovering an itinerary, but it has not yet replaced the conventional checkout process.

Southwest Wants To Reach Travelers Earlier

Southwest describes the launch as the beginning of a phased approach to AI-powered booking rather than a finished product. The carrier says its objective is to appear earlier in the customer journey, when travelers are still deciding where to go, which flights fit their plans, and which airline they want to consider. That positioning could become increasingly significant as conversational AI changes how consumers discover travel options. A traditional search engine generally sends users to multiple websites, while a conversational system can narrow a request through an extended exchange. For an airline, being available within that interaction creates another opportunity to present its schedules and fares before a traveler reaches an online travel agency or competing carrier.

Chief Information Officer Lauren Woods said Southwest is building a secure and scalable foundation intended to support additional AI developments. While the airline has not disclosed specific timing for later phases, the technological groundwork is already being laid through other partnerships. Southwest announced in June that it was partnering with AWS to transition toward a cloud-based, AI-enabled technology architecture by 2028. The airline said the modernization is intended to improve the speed, flexibility, and reliability of systems supporting areas including seat sales and daily operations.

Southwest is not the first airline to appear in ChatGPT. Virgin Atlantic launched a similar tool in April, making Southwest the first US-based airline to introduce this type of ChatGPT experience. Virgin’s implementation also allows customers to explore flights within the conversation before sending them to the carrier’s website to complete the reservation. For Southwest, however, the significance lies in taking an existing booking process and moving its opening stage into a conversational environment. If future versions add award searches, account recognition, and eventually in-chat transactions, the current plugin could become the foundation for a substantially different way of purchasing an airline ticket.
