Phase 2 of Canada’s LNG journey launches, expanding opportunities in Canada and beyond

Canada took a significant step closer to achieving its goal of becoming a top five global LNG producer with LNG Canada’s recent positive Final Investment Decision on its Phase 2 expansion.

When the first cargo of lower-emission Canadian natural gas departed LNG Canada in 2025, it marked one of our country’s most significant milestones – launching a new industry and opening access for Canadian energy to reach reliable, trusted trading partners. With Phase 2 advancing, Canada is firmly securing its place on the global stage, while ensuring Canadians benefit for decades to come.

LNG Canada Phase 2 will double production – increasing total output from 14 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 28 MTPA – and support further diversification of Canada’s economy, while helping to meet growing energy demand in Asia. Upon completion in the early 2030s, LNG Canada will be one of the largest LNG facilities in the world, attracting $33 billion in private-sector capital to Canada, generating thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in local spend.

Coastal GasLink Phase 2: Increasing pipeline capacity, without new pipe

Coastal GasLink, the pipeline that delivers Canadian natural gas to LNG Canada, was Canada’s first new major pipeline to tidewater in 70-plus years. Indigenous Nations, local communities, governments, workers and industry helped make it happen. That success is becoming the foundation for LNG Canada’s next phase and has led to Coastal GasLink announcing its own Phase 2 expansion.

Coastal GasLink Phase 2 will nearly double the amount of natural gas that can be transported through the existing pipeline by adding new compressor stations and upgrading facilities along the existing 670 km route from Dawson Creek to the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, British Columbia.

While the next chapter of Coastal GasLink is being built largely on infrastructure already in place, with no additional pipeline needed, it will deliver significant benefits in the form of construction jobs, local contracting and procurement, and long-term operating careers.

Connecting more Canadian energy to the world

This all comes at an important time for Canada.

Trade relationships are shifting. Geopolitical uncertainty is reshaping economies. Countries around the world are thinking more carefully about where their energy comes from and who they can count on to supply it.

Canada has what it takes: a stable democracy with vast natural gas resources, the people with the innovation and drive to build and operate world-class infrastructure and some of the highest safety and environmental standards in the world.

With Phase 2 of Canada’s LNG journey underway, Canada is poised to provide growing global markets with secure, reliable energy and a lower-emission alternative to higher-emitting fuels for decades to come.
