There’s a good reason why this particular model keeps popping up in recommendations across the board. CNET home and kitchen expert David Watsky rated the Breville Barista Express as the best espresso machine of 2026.

The machine has been a long-running favorite for people looking to purchase something that meets the exacting standards needed for good espresso, without splurging on a standalone grinder and machine. The appeal here is that it gives you practically everything you need to make good espresso and milk drinks in one single machine.

To start, there’s a conical burr grinder included, which is essential to ensure the machine doesn’t burn the beans while grinding. The Barista Express also features dose control, low-pressure pre-infusion and PID-based temperature control to dial in the precise temperatures needed for specialty coffee. While the list of capabilities runs long, the manual steam wand is worth mentioning for its ability to create perfect microfoam.

That said, you’ll still have to get your hands dirty if you want a great cup of coffee. Unlike an automatic coffee machine, you can’t just press a button and walk away. The Barista Express is a semi-automatic machine, which means you’ll need to grind and dose your coffee manually, tamp the grounds and pull the shot by yourself. Since it’s a single-boiler machine, you’ll also have to wait a bit before steaming milk in case you’re looking to make a hot latte. The good news is that the Breville Barista Express is the perfect playground to learn the coffee ritual, as it makes the process extremely easy.

At $500, this Prime Day deal is a no-brainer if you’re in the market for a quality coffee machine. The Breville Barista Express packs all the essentials to make excellent coffee and is built to last.

Alternatives to consider

As good as the Breville Barista Pro is, it isn’t the only option in town. In fact, Breville’s own Bambino Plus is a solid choice if you don’t care about a built-in grinder. At $400, the Bambino Plus is a good choice if you prefer pre-ground beans or are eyeing a dedicated grinder.

Elsewhere, the Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier is a compelling alternative as well. Currently discounted to $500 from its usual $600 price, the machine includes a built-in grinder and even a scale. It packs an automatic milk frothing system. The Ninja can even prepare cold brew, making it a true all-in-one coffee machine. Just keep in mind that the Ninja is a significantly larger machine and will need adequate counter space.
