Minister Sidhu strengthens partnerships and advances Canada’s trade priorities at G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting

Yesterday, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, concluded his participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, advancing Canada’s trade priorities and strengthening its relationships with trusted and reliable partners.

At the meeting, Minister Sidhu highlighted Canada’s commitment to open, predictable and rules-based trade that supports economic growth, creates opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses, and strengthens global supply chain resilience.

The Minister also participated in discussions on key issues facing today’s global trading system, such as the weaponization of food through coercive trade actions, the eradication of forced labour from global supply chains, and structural excess capacity and production. G20 trade ministers and senior representatives also exchanged on the most-favored nation (MFN) principle.

On the margins of the G20, Canada participated in the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC) ministerial meeting and reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to address steel excess capacity and advance policies that protect jobs and support the industry’s economic health.

Finally, while in Milwaukee, Minister Sidhu met with many international counterparts to advance cooperation on shared trade priorities and to build momentum in Canada’s trade agreement negotiations. More specifically, the Minister met with:

  • Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry, India
  • Nicolas Forissier, Minister Delegate to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, responsible for Foreign Trade and Attractiveness, France
  • Maroš Šefčovič, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, European Union
  • Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Kassabi, Minister of Commerce, Saudi Arabia
  • Andrzej Domański, Minister of Finance and Economy, Poland
  • Ömer Bolat, Minister of Trade, Türkiye
  • Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism, Special Minister of State, Australia
  • Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Brazil
  • Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative, United States
  • Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, Mexico
  • Li Chenngang, International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce, China
  • Dr. Thomas Steffen, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany
  • Horii Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Japan
  • Budi Santoso, Minister of Trade, Indonesia

Minister Sidhu also conducted a Wisconsin business program to promote Canada-United States cross-border trade and investment.
