Yesterday, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, met with Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security and for Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, while attending the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič discussed the importance of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent attendance at the EU’s State of the Union address and the Prime Miniter’s address to the European Parliament, which underscored the unprecedented level of ambition to deepen engagement on both sides of the Atlantic. Minister Sidhu highlighted Canada’s desire to work with the EU on a full range of strategic capabilities including critical minerals, defence and digital trade.
Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič discussed the upcoming 10th anniversary of the signature of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), noting its success to date, with bilateral merchandise trade close to 80% higher compared to pre-CETA levels.
Minister Sidhu highlighted the Canada-EU Summit, which Canada will host in Montréal, Quebec, on October 29 and 30, 2026. Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič also discussed the ongoing negotiations toward a Canada-EU digital trade agreement.
Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič will meet later this month in Dublin, Ireland, for the informal meeting of EU trade ministers.
