United Airlines Quietly Adds Personal Flight History Tracker To Its App

United Airlines has quietly rolled out a new feature on its mobile application that allows users to track their history of flying with the carrier. Known as ‘My Flight Journey,’ the feature details every sector that a given passenger has flown on with the Chicago-based US legacy carrier.

Such is the level of detail that the information corresponding to the relevant flights even goes as granular as showing the liveries of the aircraft involved. This will be a particularly interesting aspect for avgeeks looking to track their flights on specially-painted aircraft. However, the feature’s similarities to the Flighty app have also raised eyebrows online.

As reported online by the likes of Inside Flyer and One Mile At A Time, United Airlines flyers may have recently noticed a new feature on the Star Alliance founding member’s mobile app. ‘My Flight Journey’ tracks a user’s flights with United Airlines, giving them their very own online logbook detailing their travels with the carrier. Among the other details included are the flight time and miles flown.

The former gives users a fascinating insight into fluctuations across a certain route that they may have traveled on many times. The carrier’s fleet also features, with the number of aircraft models traveled on and your most-flown type detailed. The feature has raised eyebrows due to its similarities to Flighty, an app about which, according to One Mile At A Time, United CEO Scott Kirby has said that:

“I told our team we should just go buy Flighty. We’ll keep running it as Flighty, but I just want smart people that aren’t sitting at headquarters that believe anything is possible.”

As One Mile At A Time notes, while this is not a feature that ultimately makes any difference to your flight itself, it could go a long way in fostering a stronger sense of brand identity between United Airlines and its passengers. However, Flighty has taken to social media to share its tongue-in-cheek response to the feature, noting its similarities to its own app.

Indeed, the company said on X (formerly known as Twitter) that “on advice of our legal counsel @Ryanair, we would like to formally clarify that we have *not* been acquired by @united.” Flighty went on to say that “although it may look like it, in reality they have only acquired a copy machine.”

Flighty also highlighted that the similarities are particularly striking when compared to its own app interface on Android devices. With that being said, it isn’t a complete copy, with some users noting that United’s version omits delay details, perhaps for obvious reasons, as this is not a metric that United or its flyers want to see tallied up. The News Follows Another Interesting Update To The United App

This is not the only interesting new feature that United has added to its app in recent times. Indeed, last month, the carrier also announced that users of its app could now avail themselves of added flexibility when it comes to changing to an earlier standby flight. The carrier said that it “automatically monitors availability behind the scenes and sends a text notification when a seat becomes available.”

United rolled this particular feature out just in time for the Labor Day weekend at the start of September. This is one of the busiest times of the year for any major US carrier, and, while a degree of disruption across such a large network is somewhat unavoidable, this industry-first feature allows passengers to make easier changes when things do go wrong.
