This fall, Dior Beverly Hills will become a showcase for the work of the late French artist Louis Cane.
From Oct. 3 to 16, the French luxury fashion house will stage an art exhibition devoted to Cane and his wife, Nicole Cane, bringing together sculpture, furniture and other pieces ahead of a Dec. 8 tribute sale at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York City.
A figure in late 20th-century French art, Cane was a painter, sculptor and furniture designer associated with the Supports/Surfaces movement, which emerged in France around 1969. Cane, who died in Paris in 2024 at age 80, examined and deconstructed the traditional canvas in his early work before expanding into sculpture, furniture and the decorative arts. He developed much of that work from studios in Paris and Villefranche-sur-Mer in the South of France.
The Los Angeles presentation will highlight that range, with works incorporating bronze, marble, parchment, lacquer and precious woods that Cane used over nearly six decades of collaboration with artisans, according to Dior.
Works on view will include bronze trees, figurative pieces, lanterns featuring playful monkey motifs and furniture decorated with butterflies. Dior describes his work as a world “infused with 18th-century French art, nature, fauna, humor and a deeply personal sense of wonder.”
The presentation follows other art-focused exhibitions staged by Dior. In 2022, the house showed more than 20 works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne at 30 Montaigne in Paris ahead of an auction of their work. Like that presentation, the Cane exhibition brings art, furniture and decorative objects together at Dior.
