Following a surprise announcement in July, Square Enix has officially released Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 on the Switch 2 this week. If you are wondering how the HD-2D RPG series looks on Nintendo’s new hybrid system compared to the old one, side-by-side graphics comparison videos are now being uploaded online.
According to Square Enix, the Switch 2 versions come with “improved resolution and framerate”. As you can see in the video above, there are also improved load times. RPG Site has taken a closer look, and the Switch 2 versions of these titles run at 60fps, while the original Switch versions target 30fps.
For anyone planning to revisit these titles on Switch 2, there’s also no upgrade path for existing Switch owners, so you’ll have to buy these games again or stick with your existing versions. Save data from the Switch versions also doesn’t carry over to the Switch 2 releases, so you’re starting from scratch with save files.
This follows on from Square Enix’s release of DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on the Switch 2 last week. Like these Octopath Traveler games, there’s also no upgrade path for Switch owners, and your existing save data won’t carry over.
