After learning in March that Michael Jordan’s second championship sneaker, the Air Jordan 7 Playoffs, would be returning to retail after a lengthy 15-year hiatus, a first look at the new reissue has surfaced.

Detailed in-hand images shared by @rache1_nguyen show a first look at the upcoming Air Jordan 7 retro playoffs reissue and all of its finer points. The latest iteration of the colorway will feature a two-tone black-and-gray upper, a feature that has historically alternated between solid black and the contrasting look seen on the upcoming reissue. But the sneaker’s key coloring comes from its red and purple accents, shades which skirted the line of the NBA’s 1990s uniform guidelines as it wasn’t common for non-team colors to be included in the era’s on-court sneakers.

Shortly after the first reissue arrived in 2002, Air Jordan 7 Retro Playoffs was coined with another nickname: Raptors. The moniker came from the sneaker’s purple and red coloring, which was a close match for the colors used by the Toronto Raptors. However, the Raptors expansion team wasn’t brought to the NBA until 1995, while the original Playoffs Air Jordan 7 arrived three years earlier in 1992. Historical revisionism over the decades since has popularized the Raptors nickname, but purists still consider this Air Jordan 7 colorway to be the Playoffs style.

The Playoffs makeup was one of five original Air Jordan 7 releases from 1991 to 1992 alongside the Hare, Bordeaux, Cardinal and Olympic styles. And although the Playoffs style hasn’t been seen at retail in nearly two decades, reissues of the sneaker have been abundant, reappearing at retail in 2002, in 2009 as part of a Defining Moments Pack and, most recently, in 2012.

The Air Jordan 7 Retro OG Playoffs is currently set to be released on Feb. 20 for a retail price of $215 with availability from Nike’s Snkrs app and select Jordan Brand retailers globally. The full colorway for the 2027 iteration is Black/Dark Smoke Gray/True Red/Eggplant and its style code is JJ5628-001.
