Gerard Darel x Merci Collab: A Parisian Family Affair for Fall


PARIS — For fall, French premium contemporary brand Gérard Darel is packing its bags (and jeans and sweaters) and bringing them to the Merci concept store, turning a longstanding retail relationship into a residency that also creates a new family connection.

Merci chief executive officer Arthur Gerbi and his brother Laurent Gerbi, who co-leads Gérard Darel with CEO David Maruani, are creating a collaboration between the two brands for the first time.

“This one is particularly meaningful to me because Gérard Darel is my parents’ maison, and many of my references come from my family. Art, furniture, the way we inhabit a space, entertain, look at clothing, and the need to constantly question what it means to be modern in a given era….All of this is part of a culture that has been passed down to me,” Arthur Gerbi told WWD.

For Arthur, the family connection gives the project a personal dimension, but the collaboration is ultimately about bringing together two distinct perspectives.

“For me, a collaboration is about bringing together two perspectives that each have something to offer the other,” Arthur Gerbi said.

Starting Monday, Gérard Darel will unpack its world across Merci’s flagship Boulevard Beaumarchais spaces, with some house signatures, archival pieces and new products created with Merci, such as a micro-version of its 24H bag.

Merci’s Candide shopping bag and tote have been produced in leather and suede for the first time, and the capsule also includes scarves, throws, cushions, notebooks and accessories.

At Merci, Arthur Gerbi has pursued a strong collaboration strategy, and this one made sense because the store has carried Gérard Darel for five years and the label “fits seamlessly within our overall brand offering,” he said.

“I love its perspective on the world: the ways people travel, get around, furnish their homes and make music,” Arthur Gerbi said. “Darel takes an interest in ways of living all over the world, then considers how to translate these observations into clothing.”

“In their own way, Merci and Darel both champion an urban art of living,” he said.

The family connection, however, does not mean the two businesses operate as one. Gerbi noted that he has never worked at Gérard Darel and is the only member of his family to work at Merci.

“The teams, backgrounds and universes are very different. This independence is precisely what makes the encounter so interesting: each brings its own distinct perspective,” he said.

“For me, Gérard Darel is a maison of leather par excellence,” Arthur Gerbi said. “Its craftsmanship made it a natural choice to entrust the Candide shopping bag and the tote bag with the task of producing them in leather for the very first time.”

The product development was less about imposing one brand’s aesthetic on the other than working through differences, he added. When prototypes failed, the teams often arrived at the same diagnosis but proposed different solutions.

“We would then compare ideas and make decisions together. It was intellectually very stimulating,” he said. “This process allowed us to create pieces in which both houses recognize themselves.”

For Laurent Gerbi, the collaboration reflects a shared connection to Paris and its creative energy.

“Both our houses are deeply connected to what Paris represents,” said Laurent Gerbi. “The idea of a Parisian stroll therefore came about quite naturally.”

“We approached this collaboration as a complete project, with its own rhythm and narrative. It was important to create a cohesive experience and allow this first encounter to unfold naturally,” Maruani added.

For Arthur, working with his brother added another layer.

“The dialogue with my brother comes very naturally,” he said. “We share common references, but each of us develops our own ideas. The same starting point can lead to very different expressions, which is what makes our discussions so interesting.

“I find it beautiful that this family story continues through genuine collective work, while allowing each person’s individuality to shine through.”
