Navdeep Bains’ campaign for Ontario Liberal leader has raised over $500,000 and attracted some 2,100 volunteers, his team told iPolitics and QP Briefing.
Bains, a former federal cabinet minister, is seen as one of the frontrunners in the race, which will conclude in November and comes as the governing PCs have seen some of their weakest poll numbers in recent years.
His team said they were also able to sign up new members in every single riding and campus club across Ontario, with the campaign already making 53,000 phone calls and visiting 106 ridings and 16 clubs.
The announcement comes some three weeks after the Sept. 7 membership cutoff for the race, meaning the campaigns can no longer count on new member recruits to bolster their chances.
It’s unclear if the party will release the total number of eligible Ontario Liberal members. It’s expected that each campaign will individually release their sign up numbers.
The new leader, to be voted via a preferential ballot, will be announced on Nov. 21.
