Jasmine Paolini has endured a difficult campaign on the WTA circuit.
The two-time Grand Slam finalist has struggled throughout the year, suffering early exits at many high-profile WTA events.
As a result, the Italian has fallen from seventh to 20th in the WTA ranking since the start of this year.

Paolini’s woes were compounded on Saturday as she fell to a 2-6, 2-6 defeat against Elina Svitolina in the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals.
The result ended Italy’s chances of winning a third consecutive BJK Cup title.

Paolini, once the world number four, finds herself in a precarious position.
The Italian is now ranked 20th on the Tour, meaning she is projected to draw higher-ranked players by the third round of Grand Slam events.
If Paolini has any hope of winning a Grand Slam singles title in the future, she must improve her ranking and give herself simpler paths to the latter stages of major events.

Therefore, Paolini must now aim to re-enter the world’s top-16 ranked players ahead of the 2027 WTA Tour season.

Doing so would ensure that Paolini would not face another top-16 ranked individual until the fourth round at the 2027 Australian Open.
If Paolini fails to do so, she will likely be projected to face a higher-ranked player in the Australian Open third round.

With victory on Saturday, Svitolina avenged her defeat to Paolini in the 2025 BJK Cup semi-finals.
Paolini triumphed 3-6 6-4 6-4 in Shenzhen before leading her nation to a second consecutive BJK Cup title.
“It was a really tough loss for me last year here, so I really had to be focused and really step up with my game,” Svitolina remarked after defeating her Italian rival on Saturday.

“It’s just unbelievable to get to the finals here for the first time.”
With Svitolina’s victory, Ukraine qualified for the BJK Cup final for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1963.
Czechia ended Ukrainian fans’ hopes of a first title, winning 2-0 in Sunday’s final.
