Welcome back to another edition of AUDIBLES, your weekly, tongue-in-cheek (sometimes), quick-hit, one-stop shop guide to high school football games

Alliance Week is over and our contestants now head back to their familiar local fiefdoms, many for the remainder of the season, as we dive back into league play.

This week features several intriguing showdowns between 2-0 teams, including a big FCIAC one between Staples and newly-ranked Ridgefield up at Tiger Hollow and rivals Naugatuck and Woodland in Beacon Falls.

They’re not between unbeaten teams, but other games like West Haven at Law, Newtown at Pomperaug and Norwalk at Trumbull, also pique our interest.

But before you start planning your weekend trips, a massive Nor’easter appears to be bearing down on New England this weekend and some schools are already acting according. We’ll see just how much havoc that plays with the schedule and try to keep things updated here.

Until then, let’s see what’s what for Week 3.

SPB’s AUDIBLES! Week 3

FRIDAY

HAMDEN (0-2) at HILLHOUSE (0-2), 5 p.m. –

‘House has really struggled to score thus far and Hamden’s won four-straight in this series since 2018.

WEST HAVEN (1-1) at JONATHAN LAW (2-0), 5 p.m. –

West Haven’s defense, which has been pretty good, should have its hands full with Law’s Witteman…

NORTHWEST CATHOLIC (1-1) at WETHERSFIELD (0-2), 6 p.m. –

… just ask NWC. Law’s Witteman torched the Lions’ D with 278 yards and 6 TDs of total offense last week.

LEWIS MILLS/WOLCOTT TECH (1-1) at E.O. SMITH (0-2), 6 p.m. –

Try not to take last week’s loss too personally, E.O. Smith. (Unless that’s what works for you.)

BULLARD-HAVENS (1-1) at PLATT TECH (1-1), 6 p.m. –

These two lost by 42 and 50 points, respectively, in their ECC Alliance games last week. But now’s not the time for a pity party.

THAMES RIVER CO-OP (1-0) at CHENEY TECH/WINDHAM TECH (1-1), 6 p.m. – It’s still early, but Cheney/Windham might be the team to beat in the CTC.

EAST LYME (0-2) at BACON ACADEMY/LYMAN MEM. (0-2), 6 p.m. –

These two must sure be glad to see each other now.

KILLINGLY (0-2) at WINDHAM CO-OP (1-1), 6 p.m. –

Now appears to be the time to jump on Killingly… if you can.

MONTVILLE/ST. BERNARD (2-0) at LEDYARD (1-1), 6 p.m. – Montville’s off to a great start in its new co-op. They haven’t faced anyone like Ledyard, yet.

GNH CO-OP (0-2) at DERBY (0-2), 6 p.m. –

Derby’s two losses have been by a mere touchdown apiece. GNH hasn’t been so fortunate.

CROMWELL/PORTLAND (0-2) at WEAVER/HARTFORD PUBLIC/CLASSICAL (0-2), 6 p.m. – Earth to Cromwell/Portland. Come in, Panthers. Are you there, Panthers? Over.

SHEEHAN (2-0) at FAIRFIELD PREP (0-2), 6 p.m. –

Sheehan (Class S) is 0-4 and has been outscored by an average of 35-10 vs. Fairfield Prep (LL) in four meetings since 2017.

BETHEL (2-0) at STRATFORD (0-2), 6 p.m. –

Bethel seems like the better squad, but the schedule’s been light.

WESTON (0-2) at HARDING (0-2), 6 p.m. – Both teams hoping to break into the win column after excruciatingly close losses last week.

EAST HARTFORD (1-1) at CONARD (2-0), 6:30 p.m. – An 80-74 basketball game broke out when these two met last year. No chance that happens again… right guys? Right???

TOLLAND (2-0) at BLOOMFIELD (2-0), 6:30 p.m. – On paper, this game appears to be evenly matched. We don’t play on paper, of course.

MIDDLETOWN (2-0) at ROCKY HILL (1-1), 6:30 p.m. – Very few heavyweights on either team’s schedule the rest of the way. Very few.

PLAINVILLE (2-0) at NEWINGTON (1-1), 6:30 p.m. –

Plainville QB AJ Abarno is off to a ridiculous start (653 yards passing, 10 TDs). Let’s turn difficulty level up a tad.

PLATT (2-0) at BRISTOL CENTRAL (1-1), 6:30 p.m. –

Platt’s sure fun to watch … Unless you’re coach Jason Bruenn.

SOUTH WINDSOR (0-2) at No. 6 BERLIN (2-0), 6:30 p.m. –

Cap still hasn’t lost a game in his season-plus back as Berlin’s head coach.

NEW LONDON (2-0) at STONINGTON (0-2), 6:30 p.m. – *Sweats Nervously*

NFA (0-2) at GRISWOLD/WHEELER (1-1), 6:30 p.m. –

NFA will be seeing Darien’s winning, 1-handed TD catch in their nightmares for a while.

PLAINFIELD/QUINEBAUG VALLEY CO-OP (2-0) at WATERFORD (2-0), 6:30 p.m. –

Waterford, in New Fairfield last week, might pull back into school with minutes to go before kickoff.

KENNEDY (1-1) at WOLCOTT (2-0), 6:30 p.m. – Good thing Kennedy found a way to beat Harding last week, looks like Wolcott’s on a mission.

NAUGATUCK (2-0) at WOODLAND (2-0), 6:30 p.m. –

How many times must Naugy prove itself this month before it gets a break. (The answer is 3).

WATERTOWN (1-1) at HOLY CROSS (1-1), 6:30 p.m. –

Holy Cross isn’t quite dominating the way many thought they would. Everything OK, fellas?

CAPITAL PREP/ACHIEVEMENT FIRST (0-2) at VALLEY REGIONAL/OLD LYME (2-0), 6:30 p.m. –

Valley took its time beating Wilcox last week. Almost too much time.

XAVIER (2-0) at GUILFORD (2-0), 6:30 p.m. – Is it time to get excited about Xavier again? We’ll know for sure after the next three games, starting right now.

BROOKFIELD (0-2) at No. 8 NOTRE DAME PREP (2-0), 6:30 p.m. – Good news: Brookfield only has to worry about one ballcarrier, rather than three or four like against Pomperaug. Bad news: It’s ND Prep’s Ja’cari Harris.

NEW FAIRFIELD (0-2) at BUNNELL (1-1), 6:30 p.m. –

Bunnell’s gonna be alright. Not sure we can say the same of New Fairfield.

NEWTOWN (1-1) at POMPERAUG (2-0), 6:30 p.m. –

Suddenly potent Pomperaug hasn’t beaten Newtown in 15 years and has been outscored 424-52 during that span.

FAIRFIELD LUDLOWE (2-0) at DARIEN (1-1), 7 p.m. –

Ludlowe hasn’t beaten Darien since the Fairfield High split in 2004 (0-10). The floor is yours, Mr. Love.

No. 1 NEW CANAAN (2-0) at MCMAHON (0-2), 7 p.m. –

Perhaps the incoming Nor’easter will even the playing field for the Senators. They’ll need all the help they can get against No. 1.

No. 3 ST. JOSEPH (2-0) at DANBURY (1-0), 7 p.m. – Danbury’s had two weeks to prep for the Hogs. Might not be nearly enough.

STAPLES (2-0) at No. 9 RIDGEFIELD (2-0), 7 p.m. – Staples hasn’t allowed a point yet. That’ll should change in this FCIAC showdown vs. Block and Colsey.

NORWALK (0-2) at TRUMBULL (1-1), 7 p.m. – This is a matchup you’ve got to win in the FCIAC, they don’t get easier.

WILBY (0-2) at NONNEWAUG CO-OP (1-1), 7 p.m. –

Back to the relative safety of the NVL for Nonnewaug. Whew.

GRANBY/CANTON (2-0) at ROCKVILLE (1-1), 7 p.m. –

Joe Lewie and the Bears have been good so far. Then again, they didn’t have to face the likes of Guilford in their Alliance game like Rockville.

No. 4 HAND (2-0) at NORTH HAVEN (0-2), 7 p.m. –

The first incomplete pass Hand sophomore QB Jake Rusher throws will be his first in two weeks.

FORAN (1-1) at AMITY (0-2), 7 p.m. –

Spartans can sure run the ball. Passing and scoring have become their biggest worries.

NOTRE DAME-WEST HAVEN (1-1) at No. 7 CHESHIRE (2-0), 7 p.m. – Winning field goals, winning blocks… Cheshire’s D/ST’s been a boon for Fantasy owners.

SHELTON (2-0) at BRANFORD (1-1), 7 p.m. –

Time to take Shelton’s temperature after two rather easy victories.

SEYMOUR (0-2) at OXFORD (0-2), 7 p.m. – Cats are still picking field crumbs off their jerseys after getting flattened by North Branford last week.

BASSICK (0-2) at NEW MILFORD (2-0), 7 p.m. –

Wave’s likely to be 3-0 with a big test ahead of them against Lyman Hall next week.

MASUK (2-0) at BARLOW (0-2), 7 p.m. – There’s another Walker running around out there? Good luck, everybody.

SATURDAY

TORRINGTON (1-1) at CROSBY (1-1), 10 a.m. –

Raiders looking to go 2-for-Waterbury to start the year. Ansonia comes next.

WILCOX/KAYNOR TECH (1-1) at PRINCE TECH (0-2), 11 a.m. – Wilcox/Kaynor showed up in their Alliance game vs. Valley/OL. Interesting….

FITCH (2-0) at WOODSTOCK ACADEMY (1-1), 11 a.m. –

Fitch looking to take a 3-0 record into a needed bye week before they attempt to tackle New London.

BRIDGEPORT CENTRAL (1-1) at STAMFORD (1-1), 11 a.m. –

Must have been nice to be on the good side of a 35-0 win, Central. Encore?

ELLINGTON (0-2) at CREC CO-OP (0-2), 11 a.m. – Look at the bright side, Ellington: Doesn’t look like you’ll end your season at Killingly for a third-straight year.

FAIRFIELD WARDE (1-1) at No. 2 GREENWICH (2-0), 1 p.m. –

When’s the New Canaan-Greenwich game? A month? Oof.

SMSA CO-OP (1-0) at WINDSOR LOCKS CO-OP (2-0), 1 p.m. –

Last time a Windsor Locks team was 2-0? 2013. Last time it was 3-0? … 1988.

VINAL/GOODWIN TECH (0-2) at ATI (0-2), 2 p.m. – What are the odds Vinal/Goodwin loses 36-14 for a third-straight week?
