County Championship: Late Yorkshire wickets halt Nottinghamshire progress

Nottinghamshire’s first requirement, after the toss favoured Yorkshire, was to come through the morning with as little damage as possible on what looked like a pitch that would favour the seamers.

An hour and 40 minutes in, after no little playing and missing and a couple of edges that had fallen short of the slips, openers Hameed and Ben Slater might have felt they had come through the worst.

Yorkshire’s perseverance, though, was rewarded as Coad removed Slater, who was forced to defend on the back foot and could only edge to second slip. The wicket came in the sixth in a sequence of seven consecutive maidens.

Ben Martindale started confidently, taking three boundaries in a single over off Matthew Revis to close the session at 63 -1.

But Nottinghamshire’s progress was checked by a double setback shortly afterwards as Cliff struck twice in consecutive balls, finding bounce and late movement to dismiss Martindale and Joe Clarke, again via second slip, where Adam Lyth’s sharp hands were busy.

At 64-3, especially having seen off the prolific Clarke, the competition’s leading run-scorer, without adding to his 1,280-run aggregate, Yorkshire clearly had the upper hand.

In those circumstances, the Hameed-Haynes partnership was all the more impressive, denying the visiting attack any more success for more than two hours.

Even in warm, drying sunshine, and with the ball ageing, batting remained a challenge, with several near-edges frustrating Yorkshire.

It has not been the best of seasons for Hameed, whose runs column contains barely half of last season’s tally, yet the late-season crowd saw his quality come to the fore again in this innings.

Ultimately, though, there was a ball that proved too good as, forced to defend his off stump by Revis, he edged behind.

Nottinghamshire were 176-4 at tea, after which, for the second time on the day, a sequence of maidens ended with a wicket as Haynes eagerly pounced on some width outside off stump but hit straight to cover, giving Cliff a third wicket.

There was some early evidence of unpredictable bounce as Nottinghamshire batter Lyndon James and Yorkshire’s captain and wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow needed treatment after being struck on the hands.

Bairstow was standing up to Hill with the new ball but had recovered enough to take a catch off the next delivery, now standing back, as Mitchell Hay was caught behind, after which Coad picked up his second of the day via a return catch to remove Liam Patterson-White.

James, who added 51 with Hay in the second-biggest partnership of the innings, was caught at wide mid-on as Cliff picked up his fourth and a third for Yorkshire with the new ball, Jack White then claiming a third bonus point for the visitors in the day’s penultimate over as Brett Hutton edged behind.
