New South Wales 359 for 6 (Kingsell 79, Salzmann 70, Patterson 63, Scott 52*) beat Queensland 358 (Weibgen 125, Clayton 80, Labuschagne 60, Dwarshuis 3-57, Abbott 3-77) beat four wickets

The Brad Haddin era as coach of New South Wales started with a stunning four-wicket win after Queensland wilted in the field for the second game in a row after posting a big total.

Queensland appeared on track for victory at Allan Border Field after posting 358, largely due to a blazing century by opener Hugh Weibgen who made 125 off 89 balls.

NSW were in trouble at 251 for 6 in the run chase but allrounders Will Salzmann and debutant Jake Scott combined for a sensational unbeaten 108-run stand for the seventh wicket. Scott walloped Hayden Kerr over midwicket for six off the last ball of the 49th over to secure victory and embraced Salzmann.

NSW debutant opener Riley Kingsell also had a stellar match with his 79 off 82 deliveries guiding the perfectly timed run chase.

Queensland were dismissed off the penultimate delivery of the innings after Weibgen and Jack Clayton added 156 for the first wicket.

Weibgen, Australia’s World Cup-winning Under-19s captain in 2024, struck seven sixes including one pull shot onto the roof of the Stuart Law Stand above the press box in his second One-Day Cup century.

Queensland captain Marnus Labuschagne (60 off 47) went in search of meaningful touch in his last game before flying out to take on South Africa in next month’s three-Test series.

Labuschagne, aiming to revitalise his batting fortunes on the Test tour, was circumspect early in scoring two runs off eight deliveries before a perfectly timed sweep shot off Tanveer Sangha to the boundary got him moving.

An exquisite on-drive to the fence off Scott showcased Labuschagne’s intent before the skipper moved into overdrive. One dynamic pull shot off Sean Abbott cleared the mid-wicket fence by 25 metres and landed amongst the tractors in the groundsman’s shed.

NSW pacemen Ben Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott both took three wickets although the latter suffered some punishment.

Queensland lost with one ball to spare against Victoria at the same venue three days earlier after posting 335 for 7, courtesy of a stunning 149 not out by Liam Blackford on debut.

There was a case of deja vu when NSW brought up 50 off just 3.3 overs with Kurtis Patterson hitting Tom Straker for four sixes in one over. Straker finished with 105 off nine overs.

Patterson raised his 50 off 25 deliveries with a six, which also landed on top of the press box.

A stunning diving one-handed catch at mid-on by Max Bryant ended a fine hand by new captain Lachlan Shaw just when the visitors were threatening to get right on top.

Kingsell, son of Australian Olympic swimming gold medallist Sarah Ryan, departed and the Bulls breathed easier, but Scott and Salzmann had the final say in a stunning revival.
