TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index rose over 300 points on Tuesday, helped by gains in basic materials and technology stocks, while U.S. markets posted mixed results.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 326.21 points at 36,335.61.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 185.14 points at 51,863.69. The S&P 500 index was down 0.06 points at 7,764.64, while the Nasdaq composite was up 122.18 points at 27,244.28.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.10 cents US compared with 71.32 cents US on Monday.
The November crude oil contract was down US$1.85 at US$90.52 per barrel.
The December gold contract was down US$7.50 at US$4,376.40 an ounce.
