The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Raina Forbin, Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs, during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York City.
During the meeting, Minister Anand announced Canada’s new funding of $25.4 million to support security, governance and community resilience in Haiti. The funding will support efforts to combat corruption and organized crime, prevent youth recruitment by gangs, strengthen responses to gender-based violence and support local peacebuilding initiatives.
Minister Anand reaffirmed Canada’s continued support for Haiti and emphasized that restoring security there remains a priority for Canada, including through sustained efforts to strengthen detention capacity and advance disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.
Minister Anand and Minister Forbin discussed Haiti’s electoral preparations, including the importance of holding credible and inclusive elections.
They also discussed justice system reforms to strengthen accountability, address impunity and reinforce public trust in state institutions. Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting Haiti’s security, stability and recovery, including through more than $570 million in international assistance since 2022 and $126 million for the multinational security mission.
