Secretary of State Marco Rubio alleged that U.S.-linked oil infrastructure has been targeted in recent weeks by Ukraine amid its war with Russia during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday morning, though he conceded it was “probably not” deliberate.

Rubio, who attributed the recent rise in oil prices to conflict in the Black Sea between Russia and Ukraine as well as in Yemen with the Houthis, said in the interview that one of the U.S.’s concerns amid Russia’s war was being unintentionally caught in the crosshairs. 

“The one thing we are concerned about, however, is that over the last few months, on a number of occasions, American-linked ships, American oil supplies have been targeted, probably not deliberately, but targeted nonetheless by Ukraine. And so that’s something that needs to be addressed,” Rubio said.

It was not immediately clear what specific incidents Rubio was referencing, though Ukraine has conducted strikes on the Russian Black Sea port Novorossiysk. The port contains export facilities for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which counts American oil giants Chevron and ExxonMobil among its top shareholders.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment about Rubio’s claims.

The remarks came ahead of a meeting set to occur later on Tuesday between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. 

Rubio told Fox News that the U.S. was enthusiastic about the concept of an energy infrastructure ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, something Zelenskyy also called for on Monday.

“We think that would be a great idea, an energy infrastructure of cease fire, in which you’re not- Ukraine’s infrastructure is not being targeted. Russian energy supplies are not being targeted as well. It’s an ideal outcome,” Rubio said.
