A 2019 world rally champion just showed up in Tennessee, climbed into a factory Toyota, and won an American rally by over a minute. Ott Tänak’s victory at the Overmountain Rally wasn’t just a cameo — it was the most significant thing to happen to American rallying in years.
Driving the #881 Toyota GR Corolla Rally RC2 with co-driver Martin Järveoja, Tänak took the penultimate round of the ARA National Championship by 1 minute 4 seconds over four-time American champion Brandon Semenuk. It was Tänak’s first competitive outing in a Toyota since the 2019 Catalunya Rally — the event that sealed his World Rally Championship title.

The car: Toyota’s newest rally weapon
The GR Corolla Rally RC2 is Toyota Gazoo Racing’s brand-new factory rally car, built specifically for the American Rally Association’s RC2 class — roughly equivalent to international Rally2 machinery. It’s only the third rally Corolla in history, following the TE20/27 that Hannu Mikkola drove to victory at the 1975 1000 Lakes Rally and the Corolla WRC that carried Toyota to the 1999 manufacturers’ title.

Developed with American firm Rallysport Services from the GR Corolla Rally Concept shown at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, the car draws heavily on the technical package of the GR Yaris Rally2 — the machine that just secured back-to-back WRC2 titles. Test work was handled by none other than Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala and Juho Hänninen.
Seven years between Toyota drives
Tänak’s path to Tennessee is the real headline. After his final outing with Hyundai at Rally Saudi Arabia, he sat out the first half of 2026 — then joined Toyota to complete test work on its WRC27 car for the radically new 2027 regulations. His first public appearance for Toyota came in July, driving a GR Yaris Rally2 as safety car at Rally di Roma. Overmountain was his first actual competition back.
“It’s good to be competing again,” Tänak said. “In the beginning, it took a bit of time to get used to rallying again, it’s been a long time. I would say step-by-step we were finding a bit the rhythm. Generally, the roads were very technical, slow stages and yeah it was quite a big job, but we enjoyed [it] and in the end enjoyed and happy to come here and nice to win the rally. The Corolla was quite an easy car to drive and we had a good feeling through the two days.”

Semenuk, making a one-off appearance in a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, actually led after the opening stage — beating Tänak by a tenth of a second. Then the world champion took over and never looked back.
The specs
Under the hood sits the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder G16E-GTS — the same engine family found in the road-going GR Corolla — making roughly 280 to 300 horsepower in rally trim. Power goes through a Sadev five-speed sequential gearbox to all four wheels, with a hydraulic handbrake and a fully adjustable gravel suspension package. The bodyshell is seam-strengthened with an integrated FIA-spec roll cage, carbon door cards, and a stripped competition interior.

Toyota launched the North American program this season with American rally and Dakar specialist Seth Quintero as its lead driver. The car debuted at the 100 Acre Wood Rally in March, scored its first win at the Olympus Rally in April with Latvala at the wheel, and Quintero has added three more victories since.

The real story is 2027
Here’s what matters: the GR Corolla RC2 is not Toyota’s secret WRC27 prototype. It’s something arguably more interesting — Tänak’s rolling laboratory. Toyota has been explicit that its American program exists to gather data on road surfaces fundamentally different from European WRC stages, feeding development of both future rally cars and better road cars.

American gravel is the test lab. A world champion is the test driver. And this weekend, the lab produced a win.
