Bungie’s been having a tough time these past few years, but the studio’s new leadership is making big promises. Starting with Destiny 2 – the devs will start to let some of the game’s older campaigns and raids out of the vault, while trying to build a future for the popular MMO-FPS hybrid. And, while Marathon hasn’t courted enough players yet, the studio’s still working to improve the extraction shooter.

“Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players,” studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane said in today’s online statement. The duo then acknowledged fans probably won’t start trusting “what we say today,” but they’re making moves to improve both Destiny and Marathon, regardless.

For context, earlier this year, Bungie laid off at least 290 employees shortly after waving goodbye to Destiny 2 with a final update. The studio’s Marathon reboot hasn’t been popular enough to fill the hole left by Destiny’s absence, either. At the time, reports claimed there were no Destiny-related projects in active development, Destiny 3 included.

No matter. “Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future,” the studio added. “We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe. All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”

Bungie doesn’t have any new games to reveal right now, but it’s starting by un-vaulting a bunch of Destiny 2 campaigns, locations and raids that were previously locked away. All players will apparently have access to those un-vaulted goodies in the coming months – Bungie still needs to tweak lighting, combat encounters and other systems to make sure “returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.”

As for Marathon, the ultra-stylish extraction shooter “did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.” Bungie plans to keep expanding upon what makes Marathon good already, according to the studio leadership, but also “evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it.” The previously revealed permanent PvE mode and social space coming in December should help broaden the sci-fi shooter’s appeal outside of players who are only into sweaty, risk-it-all skirmishes above all else, at least.
