One of the biggest questions when Square Enix announced its plan to remake Final Fantasy 7 into a trilogy of full-length RPGs was how the company would be able to stretch the original’s limited content. Rebirth, the second entry in the series, introduced players to a massive open-world that solved the time problem by adding numerous side activities. While some of this was typical of an open-world game, there was widespread criticism that the world felt too bloated. With Revelation, the conclusion of the trilogy, Square Enix is fixing the problem.

In an interview with IGN Japan (translated by X user Genki), director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that Revelation will introduce an auto-leveling system that will allow players to focus on the main story. The team at Square Enix came up with the feature in response to fan feedback about Rebirth‘s open-world and lengthy playtime. The new feature will make Revelation feel closer to Remake‘s more linear experience by prompting players to choose if they want to automatically raise their party’s level to the recommended requirement for any given story mission. This way, the main story can be experienced without the need to engage in open-world bloat or traditional RPG grinding.

This system will be optional, and players who want to spend as much time as possible in the game’s sprawling world can ignore it. Revelation may actually be bigger than even Rebirth, with a combination of returning and new environments to explore. That’s good news for anyone who likes engaging with every optional piece of a game, but is daunting for those who just want to see the long-awaited conclusion of the trilogy.

What else do we know about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation?

Square Enix has finally revealed that Revelation will be released on April 8, 2027, on all platforms. It will also be getting a physical release like previous entries in the series, but there is a major catch. Remake and Rebirth shipped on multiple discs, allowing offline play; Revelation will ship on a single disc that contains only partial data, requiring a download.

Hamaguchi has stated that the full game size will be somewhere around 200 GB. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X discs can only hold about 100 GB of data, which means that even two discs may not have been enough for all of Revelation‘s files. While the need to download files isn’t great for players wanting to hold onto physical media, the inclusion of even a single disc is still better than a lot of AAA games lately. If we are lucky, a complete trilogy release will come out later down the line that puts all three games on discs.
