The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that she will join Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of Canada’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York City, New York.

During High-Level Week, Minister Anand will lead and participate in events, strengthen relationships with key partners and build coalitions on pressing global challenges affecting Canada and Canadians, as well as advance Canada’s sovereignty, security and economic prosperity.

Among planned engagements, the Minister will meet with her G7 counterparts to exchange views on current geopolitical issues. Minister Anand and key partners will co-host a foreign ministers’ meeting on maritime security to advance international cooperation on this critical cross-regional priority and support the objectives of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Declaration on Maritime Security and Prosperity.

The Minister will attend a meeting to discuss Sudan; the meeting is aimed at strengthening international coordination in support of conflict de-escalation and inter-Sudanese political dialogue. She will also meet with her Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) counterparts to co-host a discussion on deepening NB8-Canada cooperation and sustaining support for Ukraine. The Minister will also be joining the Prime Minister at a leader-level event co-hosted by Canada on the two-state solution and the Gaza Peace Plan.

Minister Anand will attend the Sixth Summit of the International Crimea Platform, where Canada will reaffirm its steadfast commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Amid unprecedented humanitarian needs and the erosion of respect for international humanitarian law, Minister Anand will participate in a ministerial event highlighting the critical importance of protecting civilians during conflict.

Minister Anand will conclude her engagement at High-Level Week, on September 26, by delivering Canada’s national statement to the UNGA, which will set out Canada’s foreign policy priorities and its approach to key geopolitical issues.
